SpaceX Secures $40 Billion Debt Financing for AI Chips

SpaceX closes $40 billion in debt financing for artificial intelligence chips, Elon Musk said, securing funding for GPUs expected to arrive in the first and second quarters of 2027. The deal gives the company financing for the computing hardware as Musk warns that tighter debt markets could put more than 200 neocloud companies under pressure.

Musk announced the financing in a post on X on Sunday. He said SpaceX was investment grade and generated revenue from its Starlink satellite internet and rocket launch businesses. In a follow-up post, he said the financing primarily consisted of callable debt for graphics processing units, or GPUs, used to power AI systems.

Financing tied to AI expansion

The deal follows earlier reports that SpaceX was seeking $40 billion to buy Nvidia chips. Bloomberg reported that the company was in talks with banks and investors, and that market turmoil had complicated financing discussions.

Bloomberg also reported that the proposed structure would use a special purpose vehicle to keep the debt off SpaceX’s balance sheet and preserve its investment-grade credit ratings. Goldman Sachs was leading talks with investors, including Apollo Global Management, according to that report. CNBC’s account of Musk’s announcement did not provide further details about the final financing structure.

The financing shows the scale of funding required as technology companies seek advanced chips and data centers to support increasingly powerful AI models. For SpaceX, the expected arrival of the GPUs in 2027 links the borrowing to a specific hardware need, rather than general company spending.

SpaceX has expanded into artificial intelligence this year, referring to the business as “Super Intelligence,” or SI. Its latest earnings release showed the unit had become the company’s largest business. Third-quarter revenue for the segment rose ninefold to $7.56 billion from $813 million a year earlier, according to the release.

Musk warns of pressure on neocloud firms

Musk said debt markets had largely shut off access to financing for companies without substantial revenue outside AI data centers. His warning points to a divide between companies with other established revenue streams and providers whose businesses focus on cloud computing infrastructure for AI and machine-learning workloads.

He predicted that more than 200 neocloud companies could face widespread failures and consolidation, with only a small number surviving. The forecast was Musk’s assessment; the CNBC report did not cite independent projections supporting that number.

Neocloud providers supply computing infrastructure designed for AI and machine-learning workloads. Tighter borrowing conditions could make it harder for those companies to finance the chips and facilities their services require, while SpaceX says its financing will fund GPUs due in the first and second quarters of 2027.
