Piastri Drops to 13th After Mexican GP Collision Penalty

Oscar Piastri’s seventh-place finish at the Mexican Grand Prix vanished after stewards handed him a 10-second penalty for his collision with Arvid Lindblad. The ruling dropped the McLaren driver to 13th in the final classification and promoted other finishers.

The crash came on lap 59, as the pair fought for seventh at Turn 1. Piastri’s McLaren clipped Lindblad’s Racing Bulls, briefly lifting its rear before the car hit the Turn 2 barriers. Lindblad walked away unhurt; Piastri continued with a damaged car and crossed the line in seventh.

Stewards say Piastri had room to avoid contact

Both drivers were summoned after the race. The stewards ruled that Piastri had not drawn sufficiently alongside Lindblad to establish the right to the corner. They said Lindblad defended by releasing the brakes but did not force the McLaren off the track, leaving space on the outside.

The panel said Piastri could have avoided the collision by moving farther left after Turn 1, even if that meant going off track before Turn 2. Piastri had argued that Lindblad closed the door late as he tried to pass on the inside.

The 10-second penalty reshaped the order beyond Piastri’s own result. The final classification placed him 13th, behind Williams’ Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, while Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson finished seventh. The race result also shifted after Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly received separate penalties for yellow-flag infringements, losing the points positions they had initially gained.

Race result changed after the chequered flag

Max Verstappen won, with Lewis Hamilton second and Kimi Antonelli third. Antonelli’s podium secured his maiden Formula 1 title, according to the race results. The post-race rulings meant the points order was not settled when the cars first crossed the finish line.

Piastri’s penalty followed a collision that brought out the second Safety Car of the race and ended Lindblad’s contest. The final classification put Piastri 13th, 29.475 seconds behind Verstappen.
