Round of 32 Results: Germany Fall, Brazil Advance

The knockout stage officially began on June 29. Three matches have been completed, and the biggest shock was clearly Germany. The team known as Die Mannschaft failed to get past Paraguay after a 1-1 draw through full time, then lost 3-4 in the penalty shootout. Paraguay advanced to the round of 16.

Brazil were more convincing. Against Japan, the Seleção won 2-1 with goals in the opening minutes and in the 97th minute, a late drama that stretched into extra time. Japan had briefly equalized in the first minute, but Brazil held firm.

Morocco also advanced. Their match against the Netherlands ended 1-1, and the Atlas Lions won 3-2 on penalties. The Netherlands exited earlier than expected.

It should be noted: penalty shootout results do not affect the group standings. Penalties only decide who advances in the knockout stage.

8 Best Third-Placed Teams That Advanced

The 48-team format sends the eight best third-placed teams into the Round of 32. Those eight teams are: Algeria, DR Congo, Ghana, Ecuador, Senegal, Paraguay, Scotland, and Iran. The ranking of third-placed teams follows these criteria in order: points, goal difference, total goals, then fair play.

Paraguay, already through as a third-placed team, immediately proved their worth by eliminating Germany. Not just there to make up the numbers.

2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 Schedule

The Round of 16 starts on July 1, 2026. The opening match is Argentina vs Cape Verde. Some confirmed fixtures:

Date Match
July 1 Argentina vs Cape Verde
July 2 Paraguay vs Morocco
July 3 Brazil vs winner of France/Sweden

The full WIB times for all Round of 32 matches can be tracked in the tournament’s official schedule article.

Why This Matters for Indonesian Fans

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the first edition to expand from 32 to 48 teams since 1998. The format gives more countries a chance to compete, and the knockout stage is longer as well. For Indonesian fans, the presence of Asian teams such as Japan and South Korea has always drawn special attention, even though both are now eliminated.

Argentina and Brazil remain fan favorites. Argentina exited the group stage with a perfect record, scoring eight goals and conceding only one. France were even more dominant: nine goals, with not a single goal conceded during the group stage.

FIFA.com and Sportradar data are the official references for all figures above. The standings and results will continue to be updated as matches are played.
