GARUT — The Garut drug bust led police to a 25-year-old man in Sukawening, Garut Regency, West Java, after officers uncovered a meth distribution network that used Instagram to move drugs across areas. The suspect, identified as RH, was arrested while preparing to distribute 19 ready-to-sell packets. The case shows how drug dealers have pushed farther from city centers and into villages through online intermediaries.
The arrest likely prevented dozens of residents from facing exposure to narcotics in their neighborhood. It also exposed a delivery model that relies on digital platforms to reach buyers in remote areas. Clean separation. Hard to trace.
Instagram account used for meth transactions
Garut Police Chief through the Narcotics Unit head, AKP Usep Sudirman, confirmed that RH was arrested on Thursday night after investigators carried out a deeper probe. Police moved in after receiving community reports about suspicious activity in the residential area.
“From the investigation and initial questioning, the suspect admitted he obtained the meth from an Instagram account,” AKP Usep Sudirman said during a press briefing at Garut Police Headquarters.
That kind of communication is what makes the network hard to catch. Anonymous accounts give higher-level dealers room to control local couriers without meeting face to face. In practice, the transaction often follows a “drop point” pattern: buyer and seller connect via direct message or text, then the package is left at a prearranged spot.
During the arrest in Sukawening, officers secured several key items that strengthened the case against RH. The seized evidence included:
| Evidence | Amount / Details |
|---|---|
| Meth packets | 19 packets (gross weight 4.55 grams) |
| Vehicle | 1 motorcycle |
| Communication device | 1 mobile phone |
Suspect allegedly acted as a middleman
Investigators said RH was not working alone. He acted as a link for an upper-level dealer who is now still being pursued by officers. Local couriers like him matter to the network because they help dealers map new markets at the subdistrict level, where oversight is often thinner.
The lure was simple. Money. The suspect, who was unemployed, was allegedly promised cash and a chance to use some of the meth free of charge. That kind of recruitment often targets young people who are already vulnerable, especially those struggling financially or dealing with addiction.
Police are now tracking the digital trail left behind by the suspect’s phone. “The identity of the Instagram account owner is still under intensive investigation,” Usep said. The force’s cyber unit has also joined the probe to trace IP addresses and money flows linked to the account used to hand over proceeds to the dealer.
Up to 20 years in prison
Police said they will not give drug traffickers room to operate in Garut. The case is a warning that narcotics can slip into rural districts through online channels that are difficult to detect through routine patrols alone.
To hold RH accountable, investigators charged him under multiple articles to create a deterrent effect. He was charged under Article 114 paragraph (1) of Law No. 35/2009 on Narcotics, in conjunction with Article 609 paragraph (1) letter a of Law No. 1/2026 on Criminal Sentencing Adjustments.
RH now faces a prison sentence of up to 20 years or a fine starting at Rp1 billion. Police also urged parents in Garut to monitor their children’s online activity more closely so they do not get pulled into the illegal drug trade. The investigation is continuing, and officers say they are still chasing the account behind the network.
