Lucy Davis, the British actor best known as Dawn Tinsley in the original UK version of The Office, has revealed she is living with incurable breast cancer. The 53-year-old said the disease was diagnosed a year and a half ago and has since spread to her bones.
In a post on Instagram on Tuesday, Davis said the cancer has reached her spine, right hip and ribs, and that it is too late for chemotherapy. The disclosure brought a deeply personal health battle into public view for the first time.
'Don't ignore anything'
Davis said the first sign was not a dramatic lump but a small hard spot she nearly overlooked. She urged people to get anything unusual checked, however minor it may seem.
“I almost didn't bother getting it checked,” she wrote. “So I guess I'm saying don't ignore anything – get everything checked out.”
The actor added that she is trying to live whatever time she has left “in as fun a way as I possibly can.” She said she has tried to take something useful from the diagnosis, even in the hardest moments.
Humour and peace
Davis said humour has been vital. She asked friends and family to make fun of her as much as possible and, just as importantly, to avoid treating her like someone who is ill.
“There’s nothing that will make you feel more unwell than being treated as if you’re unwell,” she wrote. Davis also said she is “not scared of whatever comes next” and is at peace with what lies ahead.
The remarks have drawn attention well beyond Britain, where The Office became a landmark comedy before spawning successful versions around the world, including the hit U.S. adaptation. Davis’ role as the weary receptionist helped anchor the original series during its 2001-2003 run.
