Sophie Monk has long known how to work a camera, and a newly resurfaced clip shows she was doing it at 12. The Australian TV personality is again drawing attention for a revealing red-carpet style, this time prompting fresh interest in the child performer behind the polished public image.

A child star before reality TV

Footage from 1992 has brought Monk’s early years back into view, showing her on Bert Newton’s New Faces as a 12-year-old singer and dancer. Newton introduced her as someone who had already appeared on Northern Rivers Television, worked as an extra in Skippy and featured in commercials.

He also noted her training in jazz, tap and acrobatic dancing. Monk performed The Ugly Duckling. It was a neat reminder that her path into Australian entertainment began well before Popstars, the 2000 reality series that made Bardot a chart force and turned Monk into a household name.

From pop group fame to reality TV regular

Monk beat out thousands of women for a spot on Popstars, joining Belinda Chapple, Sally Polihronas, Katie Underwood and Chantelle Barry in Bardot. The group quickly dominated local charts, and Monk has stayed visible ever since across music, television and reality formats.

Her career has often blended performance with personality. In one recent appearance on The Hundred with Andy Lee, she was among the panelists reacting to a strange audience story about a neighbour. Monk was first to the buzzer on one question and immediately guessed the answer correctly, then reacted with open shock when the full story was revealed. “That’s crazy!” she said as her jaw dropped.

Why the throwback lands now

The revived New Faces clip arrives as Monk continues to be framed by her outsized television presence and fashion choices. Another recent appearance had her performing national anthems for Australia, the US and Germany on LEGO Masters Australia vs The World, wearing a LEGO brick-inspired gown while host Hamish Blake handled the decks.

That mix of spectacle and familiarity has helped keep Monk in the public eye for years. She has also spoken candidly about what she wants in a partner, saying she was looking for someone “loving, caring and funny,” and adding that she wanted a man with a job and good self-esteem.

For now, though, the old footage does the talking. “She’s appeared on Northern Rivers Television, she’s been an extra in Skippy, and in commercials,” Newton said at the time. He sounded confident then. The clip has aged well.
