Apple’s iPhone Air 2 Expected in 2026 Lineup Shake-Up

CUPERTINO — Apple is gearing up for one of its most aggressive product cycles in years. The company plans to launch at least five new iPhone models between the second half of 2026 and the first half of 2027, according to reporting from Nikkei, signaling a major reshuffling of its smartphone lineup that will include an iPhone Air 2 alongside a highly anticipated foldable device.
The expansion marks a significant shift in Apple's strategy. Rather than simply updating existing models, the company is preparing to introduce new form factors and price tiers. A folding iPhone — potentially branded as the iPhone Ultra — is widely expected to debut alongside updated versions of the four models currently in Apple's lineup: the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, iPhone 18 Pro, and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Apple has already begun ramping up production of its foldable iPhone. The company has instructed suppliers to prepare to produce 10 million foldables this year, an increase over earlier production forecasts, according to Nikkei. This suggests Apple is betting heavily on the device's market appeal despite the competitive foldable landscape dominated by Samsung.
The iPhone Air 2 represents a continuation of Apple's Air brand, which currently includes the iPad Air and MacBook Air. The original iPhone Air, announced in September 2025, replaced the Plus series and was marketed as a lightweight alternative with enhanced features. At 5.6 mm thick, it became the thinnest iPhone ever made, surpassing the iPhone 6. An iPhone Air 2 would likely continue this design philosophy—balancing premium features with a slimmer profile than the Pro models.
Expectations suggest not all phones will arrive simultaneously in September 2026. Some models will ship in late 2026, with others rolling out into the first quarter of 2027. This staggered release strategy allows Apple to manage supply chains while maintaining product momentum throughout the year.
Details about design, specifications, and pricing remain speculation until Apple's official announcement. However, recent iOS 27 beta code has hinted at features for the foldable, bolstering expectations that a functional prototype already exists. The company has historically kept hardware details confidential until the launch event.
The foldable iPhone has long been rumored to represent Apple's most significant hardware redesign since the original iPhone. Questions persist about its form factor—whether it will open and close like a book or operate as a clamshell flip phone, a design popularized by older devices that Samsung has since revived with success. Nikkei's production target of 10 million units suggests Apple expects meaningful demand, though the price point and consumer adoption rates remain uncertain.
For the broader iPhone lineup, the introduction of an Air 2 and a foldable Ultra model could give consumers more granular choices across price and design preferences. The iPhone 18e, positioned as an entry-level option, would anchor the budget segment, while the Air 2 occupies the middle tier. Pro and Pro Max models will continue to target enthusiasts, and the Ultra foldable would serve as Apple's innovation flagship.
Suppliers are now preparing for this expanded roster. Manufacturing partners have been tasked with scaling production not just for the foldable but across all five models to meet projected demand. Whether Apple can execute this multi-model strategy without supply delays remains a key test for the company's operational muscle.
