A large fire at a waste facility near Wembley Stadium brought transport links in north-west London to a halt on Friday, leaving commuters facing major disruption across the Metropolitan and Jubilee lines. A nearby Amazon warehouse was evacuated as firefighters battled the blaze on an industrial estate in Neasden.
About 125 firefighters and 20 fire engines were sent to the scene, less than a mile from Wembley Stadium. The fire broke out at a mixed-waste facility on Hannah Close and quickly drew a large emergency response. Fast. Relentless.
Tube lines hit hard
Transport for London said there was no service on the entire Metropolitan line, which runs close to the fire. On the Jubilee line, trains were not running between Wembley Park and West Hampstead, while the rest of the line faced severe delays.
Rail services into London Marylebone were also disrupted, adding to the pressure on passengers trying to move through the area. The timing sharpened the impact. North-west London felt it first.
Emergency crews move in
London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner Andy Pennick said the brigade was called at 11.36 a.m. to reports of a fire on Hannah Close, Neasden. When crews arrived, they found what he described as a well-developed fire at a waste transfer facility.
He said the first officer on scene recognised the scale of the blaze and immediately requested 20 fire engines. That call brought a major response to the industrial estate, where smoke and fire conditions forced authorities to keep the area under close watch.
PA Media reported that a nearby Amazon warehouse, separate from the industrial unit involved in the fire, was evacuated. No further details were immediately available on the cause of the blaze or how long disruption would last.
The incident came within sight of one of London’s best-known venues, but the wider effect was felt on the transport network. One fire. Big reach.
