Jakarta Braces for Volcanic Ash as Anak Krakatau Erupts

JAKARTA — Volcanic ash originating from a fresh eruption at Mount Anak Krakatau has drifted over Indonesia’s capital, forcing residents to confront deteriorating air quality and potential health risks. In response to the encroaching plume, the Jakarta regional office of the Perindo Party launched a public health initiative titled "Peduli Paru-Paru Jakarta" (Care for Jakarta's Lungs) on Monday.
The organization began distributing free face masks at its headquarters on Jalan Abdul Muis in Central Jakarta to protect commuters and residents from inhaling fine volcanic particulates. Manik Marganamahendra, chairman of the Jakarta Perindo chapter, stated that the move aims to provide immediate relief while pressuring the administration to upgrade regional disaster mitigation and air pollution control systems.
Health Hazards and Mitigation Demands
While acknowledging the unpredictable nature of volcanic activity, Marganamahendra emphasized that the local government must proactively manage the atmospheric fallout. "Air quality and exposure to volcanic ash directly impact public health. It is a shared responsibility to mitigate these risks," he said.
The party is calling for an intensification of real-time air quality monitoring and the activation of robust early warning systems for the greater Jakarta metropolitan area. Health experts advise that volcanic ash can cause severe respiratory distress and eye irritation, particularly for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing pulmonary conditions. The use of high-filtration masks, such as N95 or KN95, remains the primary defense against the fine silicate particles currently settling over the city.
Regional Impact of the Eruption
The eruption at Mount Anak Krakatau, located in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, produced massive ash columns that have traveled hundreds of kilometers. Beyond public health concerns, the volcanic debris poses operational risks to regional aviation and daily economic activities, which remain sensitive to visibility and engine intake safety.
Marganamahendra urged stakeholders at both the municipal and national levels to optimize disaster protocols. He noted that swift, coordinated action between government agencies is essential to managing the fallout of large-scale volcanic events. The Perindo Party’s initiative serves as a localized stopgap while awaiting broader systemic responses from authorities tasked with managing environmental hazards.
