Donald Trump has promised to send every American adult $5,000 if Republicans keep control of Congress in November’s midterm elections, a sweeping pitch that would hand the party a pricey and highly unusual campaign message.
The U.S. president made the pledge on Thursday in Dallas, Texas, telling supporters at a Republican midterm convention that the payout would come only if Republicans win. “If the Republicans win, you win with us, and you get $5,000,” he said, calling it the “Trump dividend.”
Only one condition
Trump said the money would have to be spent in the United States. He singled out foreign shopping trips, saying he did not want Americans taking the payment to Canada, China or Germany. That was the only condition he spelled out.
The idea borrows from corporate finance, with Trump likening the payment to a shareholder distribution tied to what he described as the country’s “tremendous strength and success economically.”
Big promise, bigger questions
He did not explain where the money would come from. On the figures he gave, the plan could carry a theoretical price tag above $1.35 trillion, and it was unclear how the payments would be delivered or whether the proposal would pass legal scrutiny.
Democrats quickly brushed it off as another empty promise. The announcement landed at a sensitive moment for Republicans, who are fighting to keep their grip on both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The pledge also comes as the U.S. carries a gross government debt that has passed $40 trillion, with the federal interest bill running above $3 billion a day. Against that backdrop, Trump’s offer was framed less as a policy paper than as a blunt attempt to turn economic swagger into votes.
For now, the plan has one clear figure and many unanswered ones: $5,000 for each adult, and a bill that could top $1.35 trillion if every eligible voter-age American took it up.
