SUMBA BARAT DAYA — A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southwestern region of Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday morning, Oct. 4, 2026, causing widespread panic and damaging dozens of structures, including homes and places of worship. The tremor, occurring at 6:55 a.m. local time (WTA), prompted residents to flee their homes as walls cracked and rooftops collapsed.

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the quake's epicenter was located 14 kilometers southwest of Kodi, Sumba Barat Daya, at a depth of 10 kilometers. While the intensity caused structural damage, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the event did not trigger a tsunami.

Extensive Damage Across Sumba Districts

Assessment teams are currently mapping the extent of the damage across multiple villages, including Waikadada, Weerena, Bondo Kodi, and Homba Karipit. Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of the BNPB's Data, Information and Communication Center, stated that 20 houses in Sumba Barat Daya have been affected, with 19 classified as lightly damaged and one sustaining moderate damage.

The impact extended beyond residential areas, affecting critical infrastructure and religious sites. Three churches—the Victory Billa Cenge Pentecostal Church, the Jata Ngedo Bila Cenge Pentecostal Church, and the Waitabula Cathedral—sustained minor damage. Additionally, the SDK Manu Toghi school building and a family planning facility in Wallandimu village were reported compromised by the shaking.

Impact on Neighboring Regions

The tremor's reach extended to the neighboring Sumba Barat regency, where authorities noted damage to official military housing. Three units of the Military Rayon Command (Koramil) dormitories suffered minor structural issues, while two other government-linked buildings reported ceiling collapses and significant wall fissures.

Amidst the chaos, only one resident reported minor injuries after being struck by falling debris while attempting to evacuate. The individual received immediate medical treatment and has since been discharged for outpatient care. BNPB officials confirmed there were no fatalities or reports of serious injuries.

Local authorities emphasize that the situation has stabilized. While the initial morning shock triggered significant alarm among coastal communities, no further seismic threats have been identified. Disaster response teams remain deployed in the region to assist with structural assessments and support affected residents as they begin clearing debris from their homes and communal facilities.
