TAMBOLAKA, Indonesia — A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara province on Sunday morning, Oct. 4, 2026, causing widespread panic and damaging dozens of structures across the region. The tremors, which occurred at 6:55 a.m. local time, forced residents to flee their homes as walls cracked and roofs collapsed.

Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the earthquake originated from an epicenter 14 kilometers southwest of Kodi, located in the sea at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Despite the intensity of the shaking, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the seismic event did not trigger a tsunami.

Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of the BNPB’s data and disaster information center, stated that rapid response teams are currently surveying the impact. Preliminary data confirms that 20 houses in Southwest Sumba sustained structural damage, with 19 classified as lightly damaged and one as moderately damaged.

Extensive Damage to Infrastructure

The earthquake’s reach extended beyond residential areas, affecting critical community infrastructure and religious sites. Three churches sustained minor damage, including the Victory Billa Cenge Pentecostal Church, the Jata Ngedo Bila Cenge Pentecostal Church, and the Waitabula Cathedral. Additionally, the SDK Manu Toghi school building and a family planning facility in Wallandimu village were reported damaged.

The impact also crossed administrative borders into the neighboring West Sumba regency. Military housing units under the local Koramil (Military Rayon Command) suffered minor structural issues, while two KDKMP buildings reported collapsed ceilings and significant wall cracks.

Casualties and Current Status

Emergency response personnel confirmed that one resident sustained minor injuries after being struck by falling debris while attempting to evacuate. The individual received immediate medical attention and was cleared for outpatient care. Authorities confirmed there were no fatalities or reports of critical injuries resulting from the event.

While the initial tremor triggered significant alarm among coastal communities, local officials report that the situation has since stabilized. Residents in affected villages, including Waikadada, Weerena, Bondo Kodi, and Homba Karipit, have been advised to remain cautious of potential aftershocks as local authorities continue to document the full scope of property damage.
