NEW YORK — Taylor Swift brought homemade cookies to the set of a Law & Order: SVU comedy sketch, giving Mariska Hargitay a tasty surprise during filming. Hargitay said the cookies may have been the best she had ever tried, recalling the visit in an interview at an NBC event in New York.

Swift filmed the segment with Hargitay and her co-stars for the 2026 Emmy Awards. The sketch aired during the ceremony hosted by Hargitay, with Swift appearing as a rookie detective alongside the show’s fictional investigators.

“They might have been the best cookies I've ever had,” Hargitay told PEOPLE. She recalled Swift arriving with a large box she had baked herself.

Kelli Giddish, who plays Amanda Rollins, gave more detail about the batch in an interview with USA TODAY. She identified them as sourdough brown butter chocolate chip cookies and added: “They were delicious. And I'm a cookie snob.”

Mariska Hargitay recalls a secretive shoot

The cast had to keep Swift’s appearance confidential. Giddish said the team filmed the segment covertly on a Sunday, using a small crew, with Emmy writers serving as background performers.

“We went covertly and filmed on a Sunday,” Giddish said. During an appearance on TODAY, she described Swift as excited to join a show she already knew well.

The sketch turned a question about Swift’s attendance at the Emmys into a fictional investigation led by Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson. The team followed clues and song references familiar to Swift’s fans before Swift entered as a rookie detective. She also held her real cat, Olivia Benson, named after Hargitay’s character in 2014.

Producer Jesse Collins told Entertainment Tonight that Hargitay helped bring ideas to Swift, who chose the SVU concept. Swift also contributed some of the lines involving Easter eggs.

For viewers, the cameo connected the series’ crime-solving format with Swift’s music and fan culture, while giving the cast a guest appearance that was filmed in secret. Hargitay said Swift’s professionalism and willingness to try different ideas made the shoot feel “cozy and familiar,” and that her presence thrilled both cast and crew.

A friendship beyond the SVU set

The collaboration drew on an existing friendship. Hargitay appeared in Swift’s “Bad Blood” music video in 2015 and joined the singer onstage during the 1989 tour that year.

Hargitay and Swift also sat courtside at Madison Square Garden for Game 4 of the NBA Finals on June 10, wearing matching blue-and-orange “Stevie Knicks” shirts. Alana Haim made the shirts and brought extras for friends, she told Vogue.

Swift’s homemade baking has featured in other celebrity encounters, too. During the October 2025 promotion of The Life of a Showgirl, she gave Jimmy Fallon sourdough labeled “The Loaf of a Doughgirl,” according to PEOPLE. BBC Radio 1 host Greg James received lemon-blueberry sourdough labeled “The Fate of Doughphelia” during the same album promotion.

In July 2025, Swift also gave Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco bread bearing the message “It's a loaf story,” a play on her song “Love Story.”
