Paul Bettany’s filming schedule for VisionQuest kept him away from his New York City family for about five months, while his wife, Jennifer Connelly, publicly stood up for his Marvel character Vision. Bettany joked about her defense during an interview on The View, as the couple’s family life and his work on the series came into focus.

The actor told E! News on Thursday, Oct. 8, that filming the limited series in the U.K. meant a long stretch apart from Connelly and their children. He said the separation was difficult for him, though family visits during school vacations offered some time together.

“I live in New York City, so I was away from my family for a long time,” Bettany said in a joint interview with VisionQuest costar Ruaridh Mollica. “It was really, really hard on me. I don't know how hard it was on my family, to be honest. It was definitely hard on me. I missed them terribly.”

There was a practical way to bridge the distance. Bettany said his family came to the U.K. during vacations while he filmed for about five months.

“They were able to come over during vacations,” he said.

Paul Bettany wife backs Vision

Connelly recently expressed affection for Vision when asked by Entertainment Weekly to name the most overrated Marvel character. The interview clip was played on The View, where co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Bettany about his wife’s response.

“I can't. You have to answer it. The most overrated Avenger. I'm steering clear of this,” Connelly said in the clip, before adding: “None of them. They're all awesome. And I of course have a soft spot for Vision.”

Bettany responded with a joke about the strength of her endorsement. “It's a little unseemly. It's a little full-throated,” he said. “I think it's quite telling, though!”

The exchange offered a glimpse of the couple’s humor, but Bettany also described how their children tease him about his Marvel work. He said the children are Marvel fans, yet do not consider him cool.

On their Disney+ account, Bettany said, he changes the profile picture to an image of himself as Vision, and his children replace it with one labeled “The Worst Avenger.” “And that's my sign-in page!” he said.

Family life while filming VisionQuest

Bettany and Connelly share son Stellan and daughter Agnes. Connelly is also mother to son Kai from a previous relationship. The family’s visits to the U.K. helped them spend time together during Bettany’s filming commitment, though the actor said he missed them during the separation.

The latest comments add a personal dimension to Bettany’s return as Vision in VisionQuest. His remarks focused both on the practical strain of working overseas and on the playful way his family responds to his best-known Marvel role.

Bettany and Connelly have also shared family moments publicly. In January 2024, Connelly posted photos from a family ski trip in Switzerland, including a shot from a ski lift with her three children. In 2023, she shared a photo of herself and Agnes cheering at the Brooklyn Nets’ final game of the season, where the team lost to the Philadelphia 76ers. Bettany commented on the photo: “My god you were invested.”

For the VisionQuest shoot, Bettany said his family visited during vacations across about five months of filming in the U.K.
