Ben Affleck’s “Animals” puts a kidnapping at the center of this week’s Netflix new releases, as a Los Angeles mayoral candidate and his wife scramble to raise a ransom. Netflix’s October 9 watchlist also brings back “The Diplomat” for Season 4, with the political drama picking up the personal and professional fallout of its previous finale.

The titles are listed for the week of October 9–15. There’s a mix of tense drama, reality competition, animation and documentaries, giving the slate more than one route into a night’s viewing.

Netflix new releases led by ‘Animals’ and ‘The Diplomat’

In “Animals,” Affleck plays a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son has been kidnapped. His character and his wife, played by Kerry Washington, try to secure the ransom payment as they confront decisions and secrets that could threaten their family. Affleck co-wrote and directed the film.

Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Adriana Paz also appear. The premise makes the stakes plain: a family has to respond to a crime while the adults face pressure that reaches beyond the immediate search for their child.

“The Diplomat” returns with its fourth season. The story follows the consequences of how President Grace Penn, played by Allison Janney, and Vice President Hal Wyler, played by Rufus Sewell, handled a Russian nuclear weapon described as capable of “doomsday”-level destruction. The decision leaves the relationship between the UK and US at risk.

Ambassador Kate Wyler, played by Keri Russell, questions the pattern of conduct around her. “Maybe these aren’t small steps over the line,” she says. “What if this is a culture of consistent lawlessness, and I’m part of it?”

Reality shows, animation and documentaries join the week

Netflix’s list includes the return of “Love Is Blind” for Season 11, with the pods reopening. The streaming service also lists “Is It Cake? Halloween,” in which six cake artists make Halloween-themed creations and compete for a grand prize.

For younger viewers, “Spike” follows Spike, Sparkle, Baby Goo and their friends on adventures built around friendship, big feelings and safe choices. “Hollywood Arts” is also among the children’s shows on the weekly lineup.

Two documentaries take very different approaches. “TYSON” is a four-part series about Mike Tyson, while “The First Monday in May” goes behind the scenes of the 2015 China-themed Met Gala, examining the connection between art and celebrity.

“Free Leonard Peltier” follows activists campaigning to free American Indian Movement leader Leonard Peltier, who spent decades in prison for a disputed conviction. The title adds a story about activism and a contested case to a week otherwise led by scripted drama and competition formats.

The broader selection also includes the second season of “Haunted Hotel,” where Katherine, played by Eliza Coupe, and her family encounter more paranormal problems, and “Cocaine Bear.” Netflix’s descriptions range from supernatural comedy to crime drama, making the weekly list a varied set of choices rather than a single-theme rollout.

For viewers choosing between the two headline dramas, “Animals” builds its tension around a family’s urgent ransom effort, while “The Diplomat” turns to the fallout of a high-stakes political decision. Netflix’s published list covers titles arriving during the week of October 9–15.
