iCloud Mail users can now create up to nine aliases, triple the previous limit of three, while iCloud+ subscribers can add as many as 10 addresses to a custom email domain. Apple has not announced either change, and its support information has not fully caught up.

The alias increase was first spotted by a Reddit user and later discussed on MacRumors forums. MacRumors said it confirmed the nine-address limit on iCloud.com on Oct. 5. Apple’s iCloud User Guide still lists three aliases as the maximum.

Two changes to iCloud email

The custom-domain limit rose separately, from three addresses to 10 for each domain linked to iCloud Mail. MacRumors reported the change after it appeared in Apple support documentation, where it was spotted by an X account called pdfu.

Custom Email Domain is an iCloud+ feature that lets subscribers use a domain they own for sending and receiving mail through Apple. A user could, for example, set up an address at a personal domain rather than use an @icloud.com address. Apple also offers the option to buy a domain during setup.

The two limits serve different purposes. Aliases provide extra addresses tied to an iCloud Mail account; custom-domain addresses use a subscriber’s own domain. More addresses can help users separate shopping, newsletters and other correspondence without setting up additional Apple IDs or paying for another email service.

Apple has not explained the updates

Apple has not publicly commented on the higher limits. The lack of an announcement leaves open whether the alias increase is a deliberate rollout or a test, though MacRumors said the live change appeared unlikely to be temporary. The mismatch between the interface and Apple’s guide remains unresolved.

For people already paying for iCloud+, the expanded custom-domain allowance may make the included email hosting more useful, particularly for households or small businesses with several addresses. They still need to own or purchase the domain itself.

Apple’s next step to watch is whether it updates the iCloud User Guide to reflect the nine-alias cap and clarifies the scope of both changes.
