KARANGANYAR, Indonesia — A forest fire on Mount Lawu has burned about 100 hectares, prompting authorities in neighboring Magetan to strengthen patrols and prepare for the possibility that flames could spread across the Central Java–East Java border. The latest reports put the active fire in Central Java, where crews are battling it by hand on steep slopes exposed to strong winds.

Indonesia’s Regional Disaster Management Agency for Magetan Regency (BPBD) is coordinating with Perum Perhutani, the state forestry company, and monitoring the situation from a field post in Karanganyar. Officials say the fire has not crossed into Magetan, but residents near the mountain’s slopes have been urged to stay alert and report smoke or flames promptly.

Crews fight Mount Lawu fire by hand

The BPBD chief executive for Magetan, Eka Radityo, visited the Cemoro Kandang field post in Karanganyar on Saturday to monitor the response. He made the remarks on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026.

“This coordination is crucial to monitor the latest developments, evaluate the response in the field, and protect Magetan from the threat of the fire spreading,” Eka said.

According to data from the BPBD in Karanganyar, residents first reported the fire at 10 a.m. local time on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026. The blaze grew later that afternoon, burning grass, shrubs and pine trees in a protected forest.

The affected areas lie in forest compartments 28 B, 32, 62 C and 63, within the Blambangan forest management unit in the northern Lawu forest district, part of the Surakarta forest management area. The site is in Gondosuli village, Tawangmangu district, Karanganyar regency.

Firefighters and other personnel are suppressing the flames manually, monitoring hotspots and creating firebreaks to slow the spread. The terrain complicates the response: steep slopes and high-altitude locations prevent conventional fire engines from reaching the affected area, while strong winds challenge crews on the ground.

Magetan steps up monitoring across the border

Three command posts are supporting the response: the main post in Gondosuli, the Cemoro Kandang field post and a post in Tambak village, Ngargoyoso district. Magetan’s disaster agency says it is monitoring its territory despite no report that the fire has crossed the provincial boundary.

The alert has direct consequences for people living near the slopes, where changing fire conditions could require a swift response. Patrols can help authorities detect movement sooner, while advice against burning land or rubbish aims to reduce the risk of new fires. Residents have been asked to report even small signs of smoke or fire to the nearest officials.

The Lawu blaze is separate from fires reported elsewhere in East Java. JPNN reported wildfires in five areas of Pasuruan regency, including Mount Arjuno, Mount Bromo, Mount Putus, Mount Tumpeng and the protected forest of Lumbang, with some hotspots still active through Saturday, Oct. 17.

ANTARA East Java reported that crews were also fighting the Mount Arjuno-Ringgit fire manually from the ground. ANTARA West Java said the Mount Arjuno-Welirang hiking route was temporarily closed starting Oct. 17, 2026, to support firefighting and protect hikers. The reports point to the challenges of reaching fires in rugged terrain, but those incidents are not part of the Mount Lawu fire.

Magetan’s disaster agency says it will continue monitoring the area and coordinating patrols with Perum Perhutani as crews track hotspots in Karanganyar.
