Asda Pauses £30 New-Customer Offer After Discount Loophole

Thousands of shoppers used an online discount loophole at Asda, prompting the supermarket to pause its £30 offer for new customers. The deal launched on October 22 and promised £30 off orders of £60 or more, but shoppers found a way around its first-order limit.

The rush reached store staff as some customers reportedly placed multiple orders to the same address. Asda said it had become aware of a “significant” number of orders that did not qualify and paused the promotion while it reviewed the situation.

How shoppers used the discount

Videos shared on TikTok described how to claim the discount by creating a new account with a different email address and opting in to marketing emails. Shoppers said the voucher code arrived within minutes. Some reportedly created multiple accounts and placed up to 10 orders at the same address.

The offer was meant for customers placing their first online order. The loophole effectively let repeat orders qualify, turning a new-customer promotion into a much larger rush than the retailer had planned.

Some customers used the voucher on groceries. Others bought kitchen items, toys, games and bedding. Shoppers also reported using the code on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which Asda sold for £57.97. By adding a low-cost item to reach the minimum spend, they said they could get the game for £29.19.

That mattered beyond the discount itself: orders at this scale put pressure on store workers handling online shopping, while customers with vouchers still in their accounts faced uncertainty about whether they could use them.

Staff describe the rush

One Asda employee wrote on Reddit that the first day brought a heavy workload. “Had to be at least 400 orders today and didn’t manage to complete!!” the staff member wrote, adding that they had blisters on their feet.

Another employee said shoppers taking advantage of the promotion were “crippling staff”. A worker at one store reported more than 1,000 orders and described the situation as “hell on earth”, saying they “couldn’t keep up”.

The staff comments were posted on the r/Asda forum. They give a picture of how the promotion’s reach translated into work on the shop floor, as employees tried to fulfil orders while the discount continued spreading online.

Asda’s spokesperson told Metro: “We’ve paused our new online customer offer after becoming aware of a significant number of orders that do not qualify. We’d like to thank customers for their patience and understanding while we look into this.”

The offer had originally been scheduled to run until December 31. Customers who received a voucher but had not placed an order may find it has been removed from their account.
