South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held talks with Britain’s Ed Miliband in Atlanta on Saturday, discussing closer defense and artificial intelligence cooperation as both countries prepare for future G20 presidencies. The meeting took place on the sidelines of a gathering of G20 foreign ministers in the United States.
Cho and Miliband also agreed to work closely, with Britain set to chair the G20 in 2027 and South Korea in 2028. Their coordination will take place ahead of the two countries’ respective turns leading the group.
South Korea’s foreign ministry said Cho held a series of bilateral meetings during the G20 gathering. His discussions included counterparts from the European Union, Britain, India and Mexico.
What did Cho and Miliband discuss?
Cho called for deeper bilateral cooperation with Britain on defense and artificial intelligence during their meeting on Saturday. The two ministers also agreed to cooperate closely in view of their countries’ upcoming G20 chairmanships.
The discussions link bilateral ties with the countries’ future roles in the international forum. As chair, each country will have a leadership role in its respective year; the ministry’s account identified 2027 for Britain and 2028 for South Korea.
Those areas of cooperation carry practical importance for both governments as they prepare to lead the G20 in consecutive years. The meeting covered defense and AI, while the agreement to coordinate looked toward their shared responsibilities in the forum.
Cho’s other talks covered security and economic ties. He met Kaja Kallas, the EU high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, during the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in Atlanta on Saturday.
Cho and Kallas called for strengthening their security partnership in cyber and space. They also exchanged views on the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Ukraine, according to South Korea’s foreign ministry.
Cho met Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar to review progress in carrying out agreements reached during President Lee Jae Myung’s state visit to India in April.
His discussion with Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco focused on a revised bilateral investment treaty. The two sides agreed to cooperate to bring the agreement into force as soon as possible.
The meetings placed defense, emerging technology, regional security and investment on Cho’s agenda at the G20 gathering. With Britain and South Korea due to chair the group in 2027 and 2028, respectively, Cho and Miliband agreed to work closely ahead of those turns.
