Michael Mann, the 83-year-old director of Heat, was taken to a Los Angeles hospital on Saturday, October 31, after a weapon accidentally discharged at a gun range, according to his representative. The injury was described as superficial, and Mann was being released after treatment.

The firearm went off while holstered, Mann’s representative said in a statement. The director was transported by ambulance, and the Los Angeles Police Department said the injured person was in stable condition.

The incident happened as Mann prepares Heat 2, which is in pre-production ahead of filming. His representative said the weapon discharged accidentally, causing a superficial injury.

“He was treated and is being released,” the representative said.

Mann, whose work includes Heat, The Insider and Collateral, was reportedly trying to holster the weapon during target practice when it fired. The Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to a report of shots fired and determined the shooting was accidental.

The episode drew attention because Mann is preparing to return to the story world of Heat. The original film is among the titles associated with his directing career, and Heat 2 is moving toward production. For now, his representative’s statement indicates that he received treatment and was being released from hospital.

The project is in pre-production, with filming expected to begin shortly, according to the report. Leonardo DiCaprio, Stephen Graham, Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Jason Clarke and Odessa Young are listed as co-stars.

Mann is an experienced target shooter, according to the account of the incident. The weapon’s discharge while holstered led to the injury at the range, followed by an ambulance transfer to a local hospital.

The police account described the injured person as stable, while Mann’s representative characterized the wound as superficial. Those details frame the immediate impact of the accident: Mann required hospital care, but his representative said he was being released as work on Heat 2 remained in pre-production.
