Finance Ministry Will Inspect Free Nutritious Meals Kitchens, Shut Violators
JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM — Indonesia’s Finance Ministry will send special teams to conduct spot checks at Free Nutritious Meals kitchens in several regions. Operators that cut portions, use lower-quality ingredients, or ignore hygiene standards face immediate closure under the new enforcement plan.

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Finance Ministry will deploy special teams to carry out sudden inspections of Free Nutritious Meals kitchens in regions across the country. Operators that cut portions or lower food quality for schoolchildren now face immediate closure.

The tough sanction is meant to keep budget efficiency from reaching students’ plates.

Strict inspections to cushion budget cuts

The Finance Ministry’s tighter oversight comes after the National Nutrition Agency proposed Rp40 trillion in efficiency savings for the Free Nutritious Meals program. The large savings package is designed to keep the state budget healthier and more targeted.

But the move has also raised public concern that food quality in the field could slip. The government moved quickly to calm that worry.

Officials say the Rp40 trillion cut will only affect bureaucracy, overly long supply chains, and the optimization of kitchen management systems. The nutritional content and meal portions for children will not be reduced, they said.

The Finance Ministry has assigned its staff to monitor the field in layers. Spot checks in the regions will be the main tool to detect violations.

Free Nutritious Meals kitchens face closure

Regional kitchens caught cheating by reducing portions illegally, using low-quality ingredients, or neglecting hygiene standards will be dealt with immediately.

Penalties will no longer stop at written warnings. The government will cut cooperation and shut down the kitchen’s operations outright.

“We are planning surprise inspections of various kitchens in the regions to ensure this Free Nutritious Meals program runs according to the quality standards set. There is a threat of closure for service providers or kitchen managers who deliberately violate the rules,” the Finance Ministry wrote in an official statement about the oversight plan on Friday (June 27, 2026).

The preventive effort is designed to close off room for local operators who may try to profit from this budget-efficiency policy.

Coordination over funds and logistics

The Finance Ministry will not work alone in the field. The office led by the finance minister will coordinate closely with the National Nutrition Agency and local governments.

Inspectors will do more than check the look of the food in the kitchen. They will also have full authority to review financial reports, receipts for ingredient purchases, and logistics distribution routes from start to finish.

With layered monitoring and the threat of closure, the government says it remains confident the Free Nutritious Meals program will stay on track. Officials hope the big goal of reducing stunting and improving Indonesia’s human resources can be achieved without placing extra pressure on the state budget.
