JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – MSP’s 2025 PROPER Gold award was given by the Ministry of Environment to PT Mitra Stania Prima at the PROPER Environmental Awards at Sasono Langen Budoyo, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Tuesday (4/7/2026). The award marked state recognition of the tin company’s environmental management under ARSARI Tambang, which was judged to have gone beyond compliance standards.
For residents around the operating area, the achievement is more than a plaque. MSP said its environmental programs have affected air quality, reduced emissions, improved energy efficiency, and created new economic opportunities through circular-economy-based community empowerment.
The PROPER Gold award was received by MSP Commissioner Harwendro Adityo Dewanto. At the same event, ARSARI Tambang President Director Aryo P. S. Djojohadikusumo received the Green Leadership PROPER award. Both were handed over directly by Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
MSP PROPER Gold and global environmental standards
MSP operates in tin mining, processing, and refining. The company runs its business in the Air Kantung Industrial and Port Area, Jelitik Village, Sungailiat District, Bangka Regency.
Since 2013, MSP has carried out mining in the Mapur area while also developing tin processing and refining facilities. Its business chain is integrated, from upstream operations to finished products ready for market.
In its refining process, MSP operates two electric furnaces and produces MSP-branded tin ingots. The product is registered with the London Metal Exchange, or LME, the international metals exchange that serves as a benchmark for global commodity trade.
Aryo said environmental standards are crucial because MSP’s products enter international markets. According to him, all MSP products are exported and used by global technology companies that demand cleaner supply chains.
“ We really apply world standards because 100 percent of MSP’s products are exported overseas, such as Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia, all of which apply high environmental standards,” Aryo said.
He said PROPER Gold shows the company has met a higher environmental management standard in Indonesia. It is not just about compliance. Innovation must also be proven, including energy efficiency, emissions reduction, waste management, and measurable social programs.
“Thank God, today we have met the requirements for PROPER Gold, so we have obtained a high environmental protection standard in Indonesia,” he said.
Energy transition in the tin smelter
MSP runs several eco-innovation programs to reduce its carbon footprint at processing facilities. One step is the shift from diesel fuel to electricity based on Renewable Energy Certificates, or REC PLN.
The company also uses green electricity furnaces in its tin processing. The technology was chosen to improve energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions from smelter operations.
Other changes were made in the production system. MSP converted technology from reverberatory furnaces to electric furnaces, replaced fossil-fuel burners with electric systems, and optimized overhead cranes to reduce reliance on conventional fuel-powered forklifts.
MSP has also entered carbon value schemes through carbon trading. The company bought 1,000 kg of CO2 equivalent registered in the National Registry System for Climate Change Control, or SRN PPI.
On fuel, the company combines REC electricity and B35 biodiesel as part of its energy transition strategy. The next target is more ambitious. Aryo said the company wants to expand the use of clean energy in the smelter.
“God willing, next year we are targeting 100 percent renewable energy use in the smelter,” Aryo said.
Residents gain new economic space
MSP’s social programs are run through the ARSARI Program with a circular-economy approach. Coconut waste is processed into biochar and liquid smoke using closed-combustion retort technology.
The model opens business opportunities for local residents. Four community groups participating in the program saw average income increase by Rp1.5 million to Rp1.9 million per month.
The environmental impact was also measured. The coconut-waste processing innovation is said to have reduced emissions from 115 tons to 35 tons of CO2 equivalent. The program also supports the rehabilitation of a 72-hectare watershed area.
For MSP, community empowerment is placed as part of a long-term sustainability strategy. Residents are not only beneficiaries, but also partners in protecting the environment around the operating area.
The company said it will expand sustainability principles to the upstream sector, or mining areas. The move matters because the extractive industry remains under public scrutiny over reclamation, emissions, water governance, and social impacts in mining regions.
Aryo stressed that the award is not the end goal. He said MSP wants to maintain operational integrity so business activities do not damage the environment and still deliver benefits to surrounding communities.
“The impact felt by the community is cleaner air quality. This is our commitment toward net zero, meaning we do not produce air or water pollution, which people around us have already begun to feel, and we will continue to improve it,” Aryo said.
