NOTTINGHAM — Ben Stokes is back to lead the England men’s cricket team for the decisive clash against New Zealand in the third Test at Trent Bridge. The captain’s return came with a surprise selection call from the coaching staff, who left seamer Ollie Robinson out of the starting XI despite declaring him fit and ready to play.

The series decider is scheduled to begin on Thursday local time. England have made notable changes in pursuit of victory after the tight contests in the earlier matches. The return of key figures such as Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson is expected to boost both the attack and on-field leadership.

Selection call leaves Ollie Robinson out

The decision to omit Ollie Robinson has drawn sharp attention from England cricket followers. Robinson had impressed in his first appearance at Lord’s since 2024, taking 7-77 and producing a sensational triple-wicket maiden in the opening over. A knee problem, though, forced him to miss the second Test.

Even after his recovery earned him a place in the provisional 15-man squad, the coaching group clearly had another plan. Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue, both strong in the second match, were kept in the pace attack. The call suggests the staff preferred to stick with the rhythm already built in the previous game rather than rush Robinson back in.

England’s reshuffle ahead of the decider

Stokes returns to bat at No. 7, replacing Jordan Cox in the lineup. England also made a change behind the stumps. Jamie Smith is back in the side after taking paternity leave, taking over from debutant James Rew. The move adds more experience to England’s lower-order and wicketkeeping duties.

In the bowling unit, Gus Atkinson comes back into the side alongside spinner Shoaib Bashir. They replace Sonny Baker and Matt Fisher. Bashir’s selection also caught the eye because he was preferred over all-rounder Rehan Ahmed, who had just scored 128 for Leicestershire the previous week. England’s full lineup is below:

Role Player
Openers Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay
Middle order Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook
Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith
Captain / all-rounder Ben Stokes
Fast bowlers Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue
Spinner Shoaib Bashir

Trent Bridge set for a tight contest

According to Sky Sports, the Trent Bridge Test is expected to be fiercely contested because it will decide the series. England, backed by home support, are favoured for their stronger depth with Stokes back as both leader and attacking force. Their usual aggressive style is likely to come out early, from the very first over, as they try to pressure New Zealand.

The Archer-Tongue partnership is expected to be central to England’s plans against a New Zealand batting lineup known for its resilience. With Atkinson offering variety and Bashir bringing spin into the mix, England’s attack looks more balanced than in the previous match. A narrow home win appears the likeliest outcome, although cricket can turn quickly, especially if weather conditions or pitch behaviour change on match day. What happens next will depend on how England’s new combination holds up under pressure from the first session.
