Canada secured a place in the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 after a 1-0 win over South Africa. Stephen Eustáquio scored the lone goal in second-half injury time.

LOS ANGELES — Canada made World Cup history on Thursday in California, beating South Africa 1-0 to reach the round of 16 for the first time ever. The decisive goal came in stoppage time, and it sent the home crowd at SoFi Stadium into a roar.

Stephen Eustáquio delivered the winner in the 92nd minute with a curling volley after a frantic sequence inside the box. It was a brutal ending for South Africa and a landmark moment for Les Rouges, who had never survived the group stage in either 1986 or Qatar 2022.

Canada’s pressure kept building

Canada spent much of the match on the front foot. Jesse Marsch’s side pressed high, forced turnovers, and kept South Africa pinned back for long stretches.

The numbers showed the edge. Canada controlled 59 percent of possession, fired 18 shots, and put nine on target. South Africa, by contrast, managed only four attempts and one shot on goal.

That pressure should have produced an earlier lead. Moise Bombito came close from a corner before Aubrey Modiba hacked the ball off the line, while Ronwen Williams kept South Africa alive with a string of saves in the first half.

One moment also drew heavy protest from the Canadian bench. Richie Laryea went down in the box after a quick run, but the referee and VAR waved away the penalty appeals. Marsch reacted angrily and was warned by the fourth official.

Davies changed the rhythm

Canada’s attack gained a different shape when Alphonso Davies came off the bench in the 75th minute. Recovering from a hamstring injury, the Bayern Munich winger immediately added pace, width, and urgency on the left side.

His presence stretched South Africa’s back line. That opened space in central areas, where Canada kept probing for a final opening.

Then came the break.

Canada worked the ball quickly down the right, sent a cross into the area, and pounced on a loose clearance. Eustáquio controlled the ball calmly with his chest before driving a right-footed volley low into the corner beyond Williams, who had no chance.

The stadium erupted. The goal carried more than three points. It delivered a first-ever knockout-stage berth for Canada and rewarded a team that had spent years chasing this moment.

Emotional scenes after the final whistle

The emotion spilled well beyond the scoreboard. Players hugged on the pitch, and several were in tears as Canada celebrated a result that felt years in the making.

Marsch summed up the feeling in a message to his squad. “You are heroes for Canada today. Heroes for the children of this country who play football,” he said, his voice breaking, after the match.

The coach also dedicated the win to Eustáquio’s late parents, who died over the past two years. For the midfielder, the goal carried a deeply personal weight as well as sporting value.

South Africa coach Hugo Broos, 74, struck a more resigned tone. He said he understood the limits of his squad and suggested this could be his last major tournament as a coach.

Canada now turns to a tougher test. In the round of 16, Les Rouges will face the winner of Morocco vs. the Netherlands at NRG Stadium in Houston, and the level will rise fast from here.

Three quick takeaways: Canada reached the World Cup round of 16 for the first time; Eustáquio scored the only goal in stoppage time; Alphonso Davies gave Canada a major late boost off the bench.
