Clicks Communicator Brings Android Keyboard Phones Back

Clicks Communicator Brings Android Keyboard Phones Back
Clicks Communicator is back with a working prototype, Android 16, Qi2 charging, and a target launch before the end of 2026.

JAKARTA — Users who miss typing on physical keys now have a real reason to hope. Clicks, the company previously known for its keyboard accessory for iPhone, has just shown a working prototype of its own phone, the Clicks Communicator, in a recent demo video.

The phone carries a design that recalls the heyday of BlackBerry or Palm Treo. Unlike the full touchscreen trend that dominates the market today, the Clicks Communicator puts typing and messaging at the top of the experience. The Android device is scheduled to hit the market before the end of 2026 with a price tag of around US$500, or about Rp7.8 million.

Nostalgic Design With Modern Features

Why does this phone matter? In the middle of a flood of devices that rely only on flat glass, Clicks offers a bold alternative. The phone market often feels monotonous because design standards look so similar. Every device competes to offer a larger screen without making room for tactile typing comfort.

Jeff Gadway, co-founder and chief marketing officer of Clicks, said the device was designed by a former Research in Motion designer, the company behind BlackBerry’s past success. In other words, from an ergonomic standpoint, this is not just an imitation, but a device built with a deep understanding of thumb comfort while typing. The key contours were made precisely so thumbs would not tire easily, even after hours of replying to emails or text messages.

Although it looks old-school, the internals still keep up with the times. The device runs on Android 16. One of the features that stood out in the six-minute demo video was a custom launcher optimized for one-handed navigation, along with a physical notification light that adds a nostalgic but still functional touch in the modern era.

The Reason Behind the Return of Physical Keyboards

Why is the physical keyboard trend drawing attention again? Most users are frustrated with virtual keyboards that often cause misspellings or typos. In addition, touchscreen dependence often blocks part of the display with a digital keyboard. With a physical keyboard, the full 6-inch-or-larger screen can be used for reading content without interruption.

Technology experts often describe this phenomenon as a form of “digital detox” in hardware form. Users are no longer trapped in endless scrolling that strains the eyes. The Clicks Communicator tries to bring back the phone’s main role as an efficient communication tool, rather than just a passive machine for consuming multimedia content.

A Different User Experience

In the video, Gadway showed how users can easily navigate apps like WhatsApp and Spotify using the physical keys. Other features include support for Qi2 wireless charging and a removable back plate. This flexibility is rarely found in midrange Android phones today, which often use rigid unibody designs.

For the Indonesian market, which has a strong base of fans of functional phones, the arrival of the Clicks Communicator is certainly fresh news. We remember well how loyal users of QWERTY phones in Indonesia were before the touchscreen era fully took over. This phone is not trying to be the fastest all-in-one device, but instead focuses on those who want to break free from constant touchscreen dependence.

Competition in a Niche Segment

Although its market segment is quite specific, the Clicks Communicator faces a major challenge. Its competitors are smartphone giants with research budgets worth billions of dollars. But Clicks is taking advantage of those giants’ weakness: a lack of design variety. Many professional users want a productive work tool, not just a device for entertainment.

So far, Clicks has opened reservations on its official site with a US$199 deposit. The device is planned to begin shipping to buyers in the fourth quarter of 2026. Although there is no certainty yet about official availability in Indonesia’s retail network, interest in a phone with a physical keyboard is expected to remain high among niche gadget fans. If this market test succeeds, it is possible other vendors will begin looking again at physical keyboard designs as a premium option in the future.
