ANAHEIM, California — Maya Boyd has been cast as Storm in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot, with the announcement coming during the company’s D23 presentation on Friday night in Anaheim, California. The film is set for release on May 5, 2028, and Boyd joins a cast that Marvel said will anchor its next mutant team on screen.
The move puts Boyd, a Broadway performer making her film feature debut, into one of Marvel’s most closely watched roles. It also gives the reboot a fresh lineup after years of speculation about how the studio would rebuild the X-Men for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige announced the inaugural members of the team at D23, according to Variety. The cast includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Christopher Abbott as Prof. X and Adam Driver as the villainous Mr. Sinister.
Boyd will play Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm. The role has a long screen history. Halle Berry played the adult version of Storm in four X-Men films from 2000 to 2014, while Alexandra Shipp portrayed a younger version in X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

For Marvel, the reveal helps set the tone for a reboot that is trying to introduce a new generation of mutants while still carrying the weight of the franchise’s earlier films. Variety noted that the X-Men have not assembled on screen since Fox’s 2019 film Dark Phoenix, which starred James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Evan Peters and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
Those younger Fox-era actors had already appeared in several prequel films, including First Class, Days of Future Past and Apocalypse. They followed the original X-Men trilogy cast, which included Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Halle Berry, Alan Cumming, Famke Janssen and Rebecca Romijn.
The new reboot arrives at a moment when Marvel is also threading some of that older X-Men legacy through its current slate. Variety reported that, except for Berry and Janssen, the original X-Men cast members are reprising their roles in this year’s Avengers: Doomsday, where they will cross over with MCU stars to battle Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.

For viewers, the casting matters because Storm sits near the center of the X-Men’s identity. Boyd’s selection means Marvel is betting on a performer who has mostly built her name on stage, not on the big screen. That makes the announcement feel like more than a casting update. Boyd studied musical theater at the University of Michigan and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She made her Broadway debut in Merrily We Roll Along and later played Juliet Capulet in & Juliet. Yahoo Entertainment reported that her casting quickly drew attention online, with her Instagram bio updated after the news became public.
Marvel’s reboot is also one of the studio’s most closely watched projects because it brings together several rising actors and one of the brand’s most recognizable villains. Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister gives the film an added layer of intrigue, while Boyd’s Storm role gives the cast a character whose presence has carried across decades of X-Men stories.
Variety said the movie will release on May 5, 2028. That date now sits as the next hard marker for a project that Marvel has kept under wraps until this latest D23 reveal.
