A 10-month-old baby from Saldanha on South Africa’s West Coast was taken to hospital at the weekend with severe injuries, and authorities have now launched a child abuse investigation. The child is reported to have broken both legs.
Western Cape Social Development MEC Wendy Kaizer-Philander said social workers moved quickly after the hospital admission was reported. She visited the baby in hospital on Sunday and said the case is being handled through the province’s child protection processes.
Older sibling placed in safe care
The baby’s older sibling has been removed from the home and placed in temporary safe care while investigators examine what happened. The move came as officials assessed whether the children had been living in an unsafe environment.
Kaizer-Philander said a criminal case was opened on Saturday, and the South African Police Service will investigate the circumstances around the injuries. The matter will go before a court of law once the process advances.

Officials say abuse reports trigger immediate checks
According to the department, when suspected abuse or neglect is reported, a social worker carries out a safety assessment and removes children from danger if needed. The priority is immediate protection while the investigation runs its course.
Kaizer-Philander said the department acts under lawful procedures when it receives reports of abuse or neglect. That can include taking children out of an unsafe setting before the facts are fully established, a step that often follows allegations of physical harm.
The case has also drawn attention because of the scale of the wider child protection burden in the Western Cape. During the 2025/26 financial year, the department received 6,737 reports of child abuse and neglect. Officials said most of those reports involved deliberate neglect, followed by sexual abuse and physical abuse.
Broader pressure on child protection services
Child abuse investigations often move through two tracks at once: a criminal probe by police and a protection response from social workers. That is the path now unfolding in Saldanha, where the hospital, the department and police are all involved.
Kaizer-Philander said her department intends to pursue accountability through the courts. “We will use every lawful means at our disposal to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and face the full might of the law,” she said.
