NEW YORK — host snl tonight is Dakota Johnson, who returns to Saturday Night Live for the third time with Turnstile as the musical guest. The episode airs Saturday at 11:30 p.m. EST / 8:30 p.m. PST on NBC and Peacock.
The timing matters for viewers following the new season closely. Johnson’s episode arrives one week after Jalen Brunson of the Knicks hosted the season premiere, with KATSEYE as the musical guest and Saidah Belo-Osagie and Grace Reiter making their first appearances as new cast members.
Johnson’s third hosting turn
Johnson is no stranger to Studio 8H. According to Yahoo’s preview, she is hosting for the third time, after previous appearances in 2015 and 2024. This week’s episode also ties into her promotion for the thriller Verity, giving the show another movie-driven hosting slot.
Turnstile, meanwhile, are making their first appearance as musical guest. Billboard reported that the Baltimore hardcore band performed three songs from their Grammy-winning album Never Enough on the Dakota Johnson-hosted episode, marking a notable booking for the long-running sketch show.
That booking carries a bit of history. Billboard said Turnstile are the first hardcore act to perform on SNL since Fear’s chaotic 1981 appearance. Host Dakota Johnson had teased the booking in a promo earlier in the week, joking that she was ready to start a “wall of death” for the band.
Why this episode stands out
The episode also widened the show’s recent pop-culture reach. Billboard said Johnson’s turn included a surprise cameo from Taylor Swift. That detail gives this week’s broadcast an extra layer of attention, especially for viewers who follow SNL for live sketches, musical debuts and quick-hit celebrity appearances.
Turnstile’s set came at a busy point for the band. Billboard reported they had played Austin City Limits the night before and opened their SNL appearance with “Birds,” which won best metal performance at the 68th annual Grammy Awards in February. Later in the show, the five-piece returned for a medley of “I Care” and “Dull.”
The band’s latest album also frames the moment. Never Enough, released in June 2025, is Turnstile’s fourth album and the follow-up to 2021’s Glow On. Billboard said the record debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, topped the Top Hard Rock Albums chart and produced the band’s first No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart with the title track.
It also brought awards momentum. Billboard said the album earned five Grammy nominations, making Turnstile the first band ever nominated across the rock, alternative and metal fields in a single ceremony. The record won best rock album, while “Birds” won best metal performance.
For viewers, the practical detail is simple: new SNL episodes air live on NBC and Peacock on Saturdays, then become available to stream later. Next week’s episode is already set, with comedian Shane Gillis hosting and Rosalía as musical guest.
Gillis, a former cast member who was fired from SNL in 2019, is hosting for the third time. His Netflix series Tires was recently renewed for a fourth season.
The show’s next live broadcast lands on Oct. 10.
