BATAM, Indonesia — A wildfire smoke warning across the Riau Islands could affect visibility and public health on Friday, even as the province is forecast to have partly cloudy to cloudy skies. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) said the alert applies from Batam and Bintan to the Anambas Islands, a spread of communities across the Singapore Strait and the South China Sea.

The warning was issued by BMKG’s Class I Hang Nadim Meteorological Station for Friday, Oct. 16. It covers Batam, Bintan, Karimun, Tanjungpinang, Natuna, the Anambas Islands and Lingga.

“Be alert to the potential for wildfire smoke across all areas of the Riau Islands, which could reduce visibility and cause breathing problems,” BMKG said in its report, as quoted Friday.

Smoke risk despite mostly cloudy skies

The forecast calls for partly cloudy to cloudy conditions across the province. That does not rule out smoke-related disruption: reduced visibility can complicate travel, while the agency specifically warned of possible respiratory problems.

For residents and travelers, conditions may vary from one location to another. Drivers should take care if haze makes it harder to see, and people spending time outdoors should monitor local conditions. BMKG’s material did not identify areas facing the heaviest smoke or provide a measure of its concentration.

The warning’s broad geographic reach matters because the islands include communities separated by sea, where weather and visibility can differ locally. The alert covers the entire province, but the available report does not detail how smoke may affect any particular route or settlement.

Light rain remains possible in some areas

Low humidity in the upper atmosphere is expected to limit the development of rain clouds. Local showers ranging from light to moderate are still possible in some places, however, so the general partly cloudy forecast does not mean every area will stay dry.

Temperatures across the Riau Islands are forecast to range from 24 to 34 degrees Celsius. Winds are expected to blow at 0 to 20 kilometers per hour from varying directions.

BMKG listed a forecast period covering Oct. 16-17, 2026, but the source material available for this report did not include detailed conditions for each regency and city. Residents planning outdoor activities or travel can follow updates from the Hang Nadim station as local conditions change.
