Coastal Carolina ended a three-game losing streak in Week 6, giving its home matchup with Appalachian State a fresh edge. SportsLine’s model predicts a low-scoring game in the App State vs Coastal Carolina meeting, forecasting 46 total points and favoring the Under 48.5.
The Chanticleers host the Mountaineers at Brooks Stadium in Conway, S.C., with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET on Friday. Appalachian State enters as a 1.5-point favorite, according to the latest odds cited by CBS Sports.
Both teams need a result. Coastal Carolina is 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the Sun Belt, while App State is 3-2 and 0-1 in conference play. The Mountaineers have lost back-to-back games to NC State and Old Dominion and are seeking to avoid a third straight defeat.
SportsLine projects a defensive game
SportsLine’s Projection Model simulated the matchup 10,000 times and forecasts 46 total points. It has the Under 48.5 hitting in 55% of simulations.
The model’s projection reflects the teams’ recent results and statistical profiles, CBS Sports reported. Both sides saw their games go Under last week, and the total has stayed below the line in three of Appalachian State’s last four games.
App State is also coming off a loss. The Under has a 9-3-1 record over the Mountaineers’ last 13 games following a defeat, according to the report.
Neither team has been especially productive on the ground. CBS Sports said both rank among the bottom five in the Sun Belt in rushing average. Their defenses, however, have created turnovers: each ranks among the conference’s top three teams in takeaways.
That combination informs the model’s expectation of a defensive contest. The posted total is 48.5 points, down 3.5 points from its opener, CBS Sports reported.
A rematch after last year’s close game
The teams last met a year ago, when Coastal Carolina won 45-37. The Chanticleers will now try to extend their momentum after beating Marshall in Week 6, while Appalachian State aims to stop its slide.
The odds make App State a narrow favorite, but the model’s published total points toward a different kind of matchup than the previous meeting. Its prediction is based on simulated outcomes, not a guarantee of the final score.
SportsLine also said its model enters Week 7 with a 48-40 record on its top-rated college football picks. The outlet said the model simulates every FBS game 10,000 times.
For this matchup, the model’s forecast is 46 points against an over/under of 48.5.
