Retire Your Old Fountain for a Solar Patio Alternative

Home Depot’s Solar Gray Stone Wall Fountain by Teamson offers a compact way to add running water to a small patio, and could help homeowners retire your old fountain without needing a nearby electrical outlet. Its pump and LED lights run on solar power, although the solar panel still needs a sunny position and a cable connects it to the fountain.

The assembled fountain weighs 15 pounds and measures around 2 ¼ feet tall and 1 foot wide, according to House Digest. Its pots and bowls sit in a vertical stack, sending water from one level to the next. LED lights at the bottom of the bowls let the fountain remain visible after dark.

Solar power, with a setup requirement

The solar system removes the need to plug the pump into an outlet near the patio. That can make placement easier in a small outdoor space, where a bulky fountain’s hoses and electrical cords can create a tripping hazard, House Digest reported. The panel is not wireless, however: a 6 ½-foot cable connects it to the fountain.

There is a wait before the water feature is ready to run. House Digest says owners should leave the power switch off while the unit gets two days of full sun. Turning it on before that initial charge could affect how well it holds a charge or runs.

After the initial setup, the solar panel needs roughly six or seven hours of light a day to keep the fountain operating. That means the panel’s location matters, particularly on a patio where shade can limit sunlight. The cable gives owners some room to position the panel separately from the fountain.

Balancing sunlight and shade

House Digest notes a trade-off: the panel needs full sun, but the fountain itself may benefit from shade. The product is made mainly from polyresin, which can discolor or degrade after long-term exposure to ultraviolet light. Direct sun can also make its water evaporate faster.

Owners may need to place the panel in a sunny spot while keeping the fountain in a shadier area, or move the fountain as needed. The cable’s 6 ½-foot reach offers some flexibility, though the source does not describe the fountain as maintenance-free.

A five-star reviewer on Home Depot’s website praised the combination of water, solar power and evening lighting, writing: “We are so happy with this fountain. It checked all our boxes with running water, solar powered (no need for running a cable to power) and gentle lights for evening.” House Digest says it may receive a commission from purchases made through links in its article.
