MANOKWARI — Rp65.3 billion is flowing into Manokwari. That figure isn’t just a number on paper — it’s real money committed to making the 14th National Church Choir Festival (Pesparawi National XIV) a success from June 18 to 28, 2026. Both the central government and regional administration have joined forces to fund what is shaping up to be Indonesia’s largest religious cultural event this year.
The scale of funding signals just how serious preparations are. The Ministry of Religious Affairs is channeling Rp29.3 billion through the West Papua Regional Office’s budget allocation (DIPA). The West Papua Provincial Government adds another Rp41 billion from its regional budget — a remarkable commitment for a regional government that typically works within tight fiscal constraints. “Support from the central government is channeled through the DIPA of the West Papua Ministry of Religious Affairs Regional Office, amounting to Rp29.3 billion,” said Pesparawi National XIV Committee Chair Jacob Fonataba at Sunday evening’s closing ceremony.
A Phased Funding Strategy Starting in 2024
West Papua’s Rp41 billion contribution didn’t arrive all at once. Regional authorities planned this years in advance, rolling out the budget in carefully calculated stages.
In 2024, Rp5 billion was allocated for early groundwork — feasibility studies, coordination, and detailed planning. In 2025, the provincial government added another Rp10 billion grant. Then in 2026, the actual year of the event, the largest tranche landed: Rp26 billion. The sequencing was deliberate. A phased approach keeps the regional treasury stable while progressively building preparation momentum.
Jacob stressed how critical cross-level coordination has been. “Synergy between the central government and regional government is a key factor supporting the success of Pesparawi National XIV in Manokwari,” he said. Without that alignment, an event of this scale could easily unravel.
Thousands of Participants from Across the Archipelago
Pesparawi National XIV is no local affair. The festival draws 6,182 participants from all 38 provinces — spanning virtually every corner of the Indonesian archipelago. Participants include church choirs, religious communities, and non-denominational music groups, each arriving in Manokwari with their finest hymns, harmonies, and interpretations.
The event runs for 11 straight days. Competitions span multiple choir categories — open adult, youth, children’s, and specialty classes. Participants travel with companions, family members, and institutional delegations. Picture thousands of people converging on a mid-sized city in West Papua — the logistics alone demand solid infrastructure and a well-drilled organizing team.
A Real Economic Lift for Manokwari
The value here extends well beyond the spiritual. Jacob was emphatic about the tangible economic impact for the local community. When thousands of participants and their entourages arrive, they need everything — accommodation, food, local transport, daily essentials. The ripple effect is substantial.
Local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are bracing for a demand surge they rarely see. Restaurants and food stalls run extra shifts. Lodging — from starred hotels down to family homestays — fills up fast. Souvenir shops and local craft sellers move more stock than usual. Even taxi drivers and ride-hailing riders pocket extra income ferrying participants around the city.
Manokwari’s tourism sector also gets a push. Participants flying in from outside West Papua are naturally curious about local natural and cultural attractions. Many will carve out time to explore lakes, beaches, or heritage sites nearby. That’s a golden window for local tour guides and hospitality businesses to build lasting reputations — and relationships — with visitors from across Indonesia.
National Confidence in Local Capacity
The success of Pesparawi National XIV will speak for itself. If the event runs smoothly, wraps on schedule, and leaves a strong impression, Manokwari and West Papua Province will register on the radar of other national and international event organizers.
That trust isn’t handed out. It has to be earned through professional event management, tight coordination, and participant services that genuinely satisfy. A region that can handle thousands of attendees from diverse backgrounds — housing them safely and comfortably — proves it has the capacity to host other major gatherings: trade expos, conferences, sports tournaments, or national-level arts competitions.
Manokwari’s strategic position as West Papua’s provincial capital, combined with the heavy investment in infrastructure and human resources for Pesparawi XIV, is laying the groundwork for long-term economic opportunity. “The committee expresses its appreciation to the central government and the West Papua Provincial Government for the commitment they have shown,” Jacob said. That appreciation carries a deeper message: West Papua is ready to compete on the national stage.
All eyes now turn to June 2026 — to see whether Pesparawi National XIV becomes the launchpad that cements Manokwari’s reputation as a city capable of hosting high-profile national events.
