JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – Strawberry Moon 2026 will appear in Indonesia’s sky on Thursday, June 11, 2026, with the full moon peaking at 4:44 p.m. WIB. The best viewing window, however, starts at sunset, when the Moon rises from the eastern horizon in its signature golden glow.

The event is not just an ordinary full moon. The Moon’s low position near the horizon, combined with a thicker layer of atmosphere, creates an optical illusion that makes it look unusually large — one of the most photogenic full moons of the year.

Strawberry Moon 2026 schedule

Based on NASA and BMKG data, the Strawberry Moon reaches its peak on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Here is the breakdown by time zone:

Time Zone Full Moon Peak Best Viewing Time
WIB 16.44 18.30 – 22.00
WITA 17.44 19.30 – 23.00
WIT 18.44 20.30 – 24.00

Why is nighttime better than daytime if the peak happens in the afternoon? At 4:44 p.m. WIB, the Moon has not yet risen in most parts of Indonesia. It only appears near sunset, and that is where the magic happens.

The Moon looks biggest when it sits lowest on the horizon. That does not mean it is physically larger. It is a pure optical illusion, studied for centuries, as the human brain compares the Moon with nearby objects — trees, buildings, hills — and reads it as bigger than usual.

Why is it called Strawberry Moon?

The name has nothing to do with a pink color or the fruit in a literal sense. The tradition of naming full moons comes from the Algonquin, a Native American group in North America, who gave each full moon a name based on seasonal cycles.

June was the season for harvesting wild strawberries in their region. That is why the June full moon became known as the Strawberry Moon — a marker of planting and harvest, not a description of color.

As for the color, the Moon often looks yellow or orange as it rises. That is an atmospheric effect. Moonlight has to pass through a thicker layer of air when the Moon sits low on the horizon, and blue wavelengths get filtered out, leaving a warm, photogenic tone. The higher it climbs, the whiter it appears.

How to watch it without a telescope, even with a phone

You do not need expensive gear. Here are practical ways to enjoy Strawberry Moon 2026:

Pick a dark location. Stay away from city centers with heavy light pollution. A hill, beach, rice field, or a park on the edge of town is enough. The darker the sky, the clearer the Moon’s surface details will look.

Face east at sunset. Use your phone’s compass to check direction. The Moon will rise slowly from the eastern horizon in a golden-orange color, about 10–20 minutes after sunset.

Use Pro mode or Night mode on your phone camera. Set ISO low, around 100–400, and use a slightly slower shutter speed. A 3x to 5x zoom is enough for a decent shot. If you have a mini tripod, use it — even a small hand movement can blur a Moon photo.

The golden window: the first 30 minutes after moonrise. This is when the Moon appears lowest, looks biggest to the eye, and shows the strongest orange tone. After about an hour, it rises higher and turns whiter.

Not a bad omen, not magic — but still worth watching

Every time a full moon gets attention, stories about disasters, bad luck, or doomsday tend to follow. None of that is scientifically supported.

The Strawberry Moon is a recurring astronomical event that returns every year. There is no scientific evidence that the full Moon, in any condition, significantly affects human behavior — let alone causes disasters.

What is real, though, is the tide effect: a full moon does influence sea levels because of gravitational pull. Coastal residents and fishers should pay attention on June 11, 2026, because tides can rise higher than usual.

For most people, though, Strawberry Moon 2026 is simply a free sky show. Clear weather, a big Moon, and a beautiful view — sometimes that is reason enough to step outside and look up.
