Complete House of the Dragon Dragon List: Names, Sizes, Riders

JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – Dragons are the most decisive weapon in House of the Dragon, and the “Dance of the Dragons” is, at its core, a dragon-versus-dragon war. Without knowing who rides what, it is hard to follow the clash between the two Targaryen factions.

Here is a complete list of dragons and their riders from Seasons 1 and 2, without ending spoilers. The names, colors, and riders are drawn from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and HBO confirmation.

Three Basic Rules of Dragons in HOTD

Before diving into the list, there are three things worth knowing. First: one dragon belongs to one rider for life. If the rider dies, another person can claim the dragon, and they are called dragonseeds.

Second, only those with Targaryen or Valyrian blood can even attempt to claim a dragon. Ordinary people? Burned. Third, a dragon’s size reflects its age. The older it is, the larger it becomes. That is why Vhagar stands above the rest.

Note: the sizes in this article are estimates based on the novel. HBO has not released official measurements in meters.

Black Faction โ€” Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Dragons

Syrax is Queen Rhaenyra’s own dragon. Golden-yellow in color, female, and bonded to Rhaenyra since childhood. She is relatively tame and has not taken part in major battles, so her combat experience is limited compared with veteran dragons.

Caraxes, nicknamed the Blood Wyrm, is Daemon Targaryen’s dragon. Its body is long and lean, with a flexible neck that moves like a serpent in flight โ€” very different from other dragons. Blood-red in color, vicious in battle. The nickname is no exaggeration.

Meleys belongs to Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Known as the Red Queen for her bright red body and pink wings, she also carries a reputation as one of the fastest female dragons. Her combat experience is extensive.

Arrax is Prince Lucerys Velaryon’s young white dragon, small and better suited as a messenger than a war machine. Speed is its main advantage. Vermax, Jacaerys Velaryon’s dragon, is also still young and light green in color. In Season 2, Jace is seen continuing to train it for war.

Green Faction โ€” Aegon II Targaryen’s Dragons

Vhagar is the most feared of them all. More than 180 years old, she is the last living dragon from the era of Aegon the Conqueror. Once ridden by Visenya Targaryen, she now belongs to Aemond Targaryen. Her body is aircraft-sized, her fire breath is the hottest, and her wings are riddled with scars from war. Vhagar is the Green faction’s “war key.” Simple enough: no other dragon comes close.

Sunfyre, King Aegon II’s dragon, has a reputation as the most beautiful dragon. His scales gleam in gold, and his wings are a pinkish-gold. Medium in size, but unmatched in appearance. Dreamfyre, Princess Helaena Targaryen’s dragon, is blue-silver, an older female dragon, and has laid three dragon eggs. Calm on the surface, dangerous when provoked.

Tessarion, known as the Blue Queen, is Prince Daeron Targaryen’s dragon. Deep blue with cobalt wings, and one distinctive trait: her fire breath is blue. Her role appears more often in Season 2.

Wild Dragons on Dragonstone โ€” The Would-Be Dragonseeds

This group is what makes Season 2 so compelling: dragons without riders roaming Dragonstone, waiting to be claimed by anyone brave enough โ€” or with enough Valyrian blood.

Vermithor is the most sought after. The former mount of King Jaehaerys I, he is second only to Vhagar in size. His original nickname: The Bronze Fury. Wild, fierce, and the main target of the dragonseeds. Silverwing, once ridden by Queen Alysanne, is somewhat easier to approach, though still relatively gentle for a wild dragon of that size.

Seasmoke is gray-silver in color and was once Laenor Velaryon’s mount. Medium-sized, and often seen in Season 2. Sheepstealer is the most unpredictable because he never had a rider at all and prefers hunting the sheep of local farmers around Dragonstone. His name literally means Sheep Thief.

HOTD vs. Game of Thrones: What’s Different?

House of the Dragon has more than 17 dragons, while Game of Thrones only showed three belonging to Daenerys. The scale of war is very different. Season 2 of HOTD marks the first large-scale dragon battle in Westerosi screen history.

Reports say the cost of a single dragon battle scene in Season 2 exceeded 5 million US dollars. That is why only a limited number of dragon-fight episodes can air each season. Each dragon also has a distinct voice: Vhagar sounds deep and heavy, like an old machine, while Arrax lets out a high-pitched scream.

Quick FAQ

Biggest dragon in HOTD? Vhagar. More than 180 years old, now ridden by Aemond Targaryen.

What is Rhaenyra’s dragon called? Syrax, golden-yellow in color.

Can ordinary people claim a dragon? Yes, as long as they have Valyrian blood and iron nerve. That is the core of the dragonseeds plot in Season 2.
