JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – BMKG issued an early weather warning for the June 22-24, 2026 period, covering nearly all of Indonesia with the potential for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Three provinces have been placed at the alert level: the western part of West Sumatra, Bengkulu, and Highland Papua.
The warning was released on Monday, June 22, 2026 at 07:00 WIB. The impact is serious: flooding, landslides, falling trees, and disruption to shipping are already on the list of risks that communities must watch for starting today.
Triggers: Asian Monsoon and Atmospheric Instability
BMKG recorded three main factors behind the weather pattern: the active Asian Monsoon, wind convergence in several areas, and a sharp increase in atmospheric instability. Together, they are driving the formation of dense rain clouds across many regions at once.
This is no minor event. Areas at alert level are forecast to receive rainfall above 150 mm per day on June 23-24, a figure classified as very heavy and capable of triggering landslides on steep slopes.
27 Provinces on Alert
Hardly any major island is spared. BMKG mapped 27 provinces at alert level for moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds over the three-day period.
In Sumatra, nearly all provinces are listed, from Aceh, North Sumatra, Riau, Riau Islands, Jambi, Bengkulu, Lampung, Bangka Belitung, to South Sumatra starting June 23. On Java, Jakarta received a special warning for the afternoon and evening of June 23, while West Java is covered for all three days. Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java are scheduled for June 23-24.
Kalimantan and Sulawesi are no safer. West, Central, and East Kalimantan are active June 22-24. North, Central, and Southeast Sulawesi are under the same warning. Maluku, West Papua, and Papua are also included in the three-day alert.

Strong Winds on Coasts and Open Waters
Winds of 25-40 km/h may hit the western coast of Sumatra from Aceh to Lampung, the southern coast of Java from Banten to East Java, and coastal areas in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. In open waters such as the North Natuna Sea, the Sulawesi Sea, and the Indian Ocean south of Java, waves could reach 2-4 meters.
That is dangerous for small vessels. Fishers and sea transport passengers need to monitor weather developments carefully before deciding to depart.
Palembang: Light to Moderate Rain for Three Days
For Palembang, South Sumatra, BMKG forecasts light rain on June 22 with temperatures of 24-32°C and humidity of 75-95%. Moderate rain is expected in the afternoon on June 23, with temperatures dipping slightly to 23-31°C. On June 24, skies are forecast to be mostly cloudy with potential rain and temperatures returning to 24-32°C.
What Residents Should Do
BMKG asked residents living along riverbanks and on hillsides to move to safer ground immediately if heavy rain lasts more than one hour without signs of easing.
Weather data is dynamic and may change at any time. Always check the latest BMKG update before heading out.
