Ukraine hits two Russian oil refineries overnight

Ukraine Hits Two Russian Oil Refineries Overnight dengan kebakaran besar di fasilitas industri
Ukraine launched long-range drone strikes on two oil refineries in Russia’s Krasnodar and Yaroslavl regions, sparking large fires and disrupting domestic fuel supplies.

KRASNODAR — Ukraine struck two major Russian oil refineries in the Krasnodar and Yaroslavl regions early Sunday, using long-range drones to hit facilities seen as key to Moscow’s war machine. The attacks set off fires, damaged fuel infrastructure, and added fresh pressure to Russia’s already strained supply chain.

The damage was immediate. Flames broke out at the refinery sites, parts of production were disrupted, and one person reportedly died of a heart attack amid the panic while another was injured by falling drone debris in a nearby village.

For Kyiv, the tactic is straightforward. Hit the fuel.

Why the Ukraine drone strikes on oil refineries matter

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the long-range operation and framed it as part of Ukraine’s effort to weaken Russia’s military logistics. He said the targeted facilities were deep inside Russian territory, roughly 300 kilometers and 700 kilometers from the border.

“We must ensure that Russia’s war machine runs out of blood. And the blood of that war machine is oil,” Zelenskyy said in a nighttime address broadcast on Ukrainian television.

The strikes carry a wider message too. Ukraine is no longer fighting only in trenches and on the front line. It is now targeting the energy backbone that keeps Russian forces moving. And that has consequences far from the battlefield.

Refinery Production Capacity (Barrels/Day) Distance from Ukraine Border Reported Damage
Slavyansk-na-Kubani (Krasnodar) 100,000 ~300 km Main distillation unit burned, operations halted
Yaroslavl (north of Moscow) 300,000 ~700 km Storage facilities damaged, control systems disrupted

Inside the damage at Slavyansk and Yaroslavl

Krasnodar regional governor Veniamin Kondratiev confirmed a major fire at the Slavyansk-na-Kubani refinery through his official Telegram channel. Amateur videos circulating on social media showed a huge fireball rising into the night sky from the private oil-processing facility.

The Slavyansk refinery is a major regional asset with a capacity of 100,000 barrels per day. When a plant like that goes offline, even briefly, the ripple effects can move fast — from local fuel deliveries to broader industrial supply.

In Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow, the drone strike pushed local authorities to raise their alert level. Regional officials said emergency traffic restrictions were introduced on several major roads leading toward the capital as they prepared for possible follow-up attacks.

“Our air defenses intercepted several units, but falling debris still triggered an incident in the refinery’s technical area,” a Western Military District official said in a statement quoted by TASS.

Damaged refinery capacity: 85% of operating target
Regional fuel supply drop: 40%

Pressure on Russia’s fuel supply is building

Independent military analysts say attacks on Russian energy infrastructure are likely to continue in the months ahead. Kyiv appears to have found a gap in Russia’s air-defense setup: the system is heavily focused on protecting front-line military assets, leaving industrial sites deeper inside the country more exposed.

That gap matters. Russia is one of the world’s largest oil producers, yet parts of western Russia have already faced fuel shortages, long lines at gas stations, and limits on retail fuel purchases.

For ordinary Russians, that can mean delayed transport, tighter local supply, and more pressure on prices. For the Kremlin, it means another layer of stress on a war that already depends on keeping fuel moving.

The fight over oil refineries is no longer a side story. It is becoming a front of its own, and the next wave of strikes may decide just how far that pressure spreads.
