Government Prepares Long-Term Strategy for Sports Ecosystem

Rancangan fasilitas akademi olahraga modern untuk menunjang strategi jangka panjang pemerintah
The Indonesian government is drafting a long-term strategy to strengthen the national sports ecosystem. The plan includes integrated sports academies, multiyear budget schemes, and special certification programs for retired athletes with disabilities.

JAKARTA — The Indonesian government is preparing a series of long-term strategies to lift national sports achievements on the world stage. The tactical move is aimed at producing a sustainable generation of elite athletes through the construction of modern sports academies and long-term, or multiyear, budget guarantees. The focus marks a new phase in domestic sports governance, one that no longer runs on short-term projects.

Muhammad Qodari, head of the Government Communications Agency (Bakom RI), said the government’s attention is not limited to one popular sport such as soccer. The broader program is designed to reach a range of other competitive sports in Indonesia that have medal potential at international events.

“Not only in soccer, the government is also preparing a number of long-term strategies for the development of other national sports,” Qodari said in an official press statement in Jakarta.

Sports Academies and Multiyear Funding

The main foundation of the new roadmap is the construction of Sports Academies in several strategic regions. These facilities will serve as integrated training centers for young talent across multiple sports. Through these academies, talent scouting will be carried out systematically from an early age with support from sport science.

One of the long-standing problems in Indonesian sports has been a development system that is often interrupted by annual budget bureaucracy. To answer that challenge, the government is changing its financial approach. National training camps, or pelatnas, are now backed by multiyear funding schemes.

With this new financial model, sports federations no longer have to worry about athlete training stopping in the middle of the road when the budget year changes. The structured approach ensures training programs for multi-event competitions such as the SEA Games, Asian Games, and the Olympics can continue without financial interruption.

Development Aspect Old Model (Conventional) New Model (Long-Term Strategy)
Budget System Annual, often delayed at the start of the year Multiyear, uninterrupted funding
Training Facilities Scattered and limited sport science Integrated sports academies based on science
Career Path for Disabled Athletes Little post-retirement security Coaching certification and career support

Coaching Certification for Athletes with Disabilities

This inclusive development commitment also targets athletes with disabilities in Indonesia, who have repeatedly brought pride to the nation at the Paralympics and the ASEAN Para Games. The government has pledged to strengthen the sports ecosystem for athletes with disabilities, especially by providing career security after retirement.

“The government will strengthen their development program through coaching certification,” Qodari said.

The certification is meant to give athletes with disabilities a way to remain financially independent and stay involved in sports. With an official coaching license, retired athletes can continue their careers as trainers who develop the next generation of disabled athletes. The step also offers a concrete answer to concerns about life after competition for national sports heroes.

The move complements President Prabowo Subianto’s emphasis on institutional synergy and strict discipline in building sporting success. Cooperation between the Ministry of Youth and Sports, sports bodies, and regional governments is now being brought under a single blueprint. Qodari stressed that building achievements is not only about winning today’s matches, but also about preparing a chain of champions for the decades ahead.
