US-Iran Talks Lay a Strong Foundation for Middle East Peace

US-Iran talks laid very good foundation for peace agreement in Middle East
Diplomatic talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland laid a strong foundation for a potential peace deal in the Middle East. U.S. Vice President JD Vance called the progress highly positive, even as Israel’s hardline minister sharply opposed the plan.

BÜRENSTOCK — The latest US-Iran talks have laid a strong foundation for a long-term peace deal in the Middle East, according to US Vice President JD Vance. The high-level diplomatic meeting at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland is aimed at ending the armed escalation that has continued to burn across the region.

“The final deal is like a house,” Vance told journalists, as reported by Reuters on Monday local time. “We’ve built the foundation. The house is not standing yet, but we’ve put in a successful foundation that puts the American people in a favorable position.”

Real Progress on Ceasefire and De-escalation

Tehran also confirmed progress in the diplomatic dialogue. Iran’s foreign minister previously said there had been major movement toward stopping the fighting in Lebanon. Responding to that positive development, Vance said southern Lebanon had experienced one of its calmest 24-hour periods in recent memory.

Washington is now drafting a special mechanism to prevent small clashes on the ground from spiraling into open war. The tactical step is meant to keep the rival sides in active contact whenever tension flares at the border. The regional strain that had surged after cross-border attacks is now showing a clear downward trend.

“We are very focused on building what we call a deconfliction mechanism. The idea is simple: when something happens on the ground, both sides have to talk to reduce the situation,” Vance said, explaining Washington’s preventive diplomacy.

Plan to Release Iranian Assets for American Farmers

One of the key points in the Swiss negotiations is the potential release of Iranian assets frozen by the US government. Vance signaled strongly that the funds would be released only for tightly controlled humanitarian use. The US government plans to direct those assets toward purchasing food commodities from within the country.

The scheme is expected to benefit America’s agricultural sector while also easing Iran’s food crisis. The released funds would not be handed over as unrestricted cash, but through a special clearing system directly tied to US agricultural exporters.

“If we release Iranian assets, we will make sure the money is used to help the Iranian people get food, not to fund the military or proxy groups. The funds will be allocated to buy soybeans, corn, and wheat directly from American farmers,” Vance said.

Strong Pushback From Within Israel

The peace plan immediately drew sharp rejection from one of Washington’s closest allies, Israel. Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir launched a strong critique during a meeting of the Otzma Yehudit party in the Knesset. He urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reject the agreement outright.

According to Ben-Gvir, the Israeli military should not be restricted in responding militarily along the Lebanese border. The opposition from the right-wing cabinet is expected to become a serious obstacle to the deal’s implementation on the ground.

“I respect the Vice President of the United States, but my greatest commitment is to our soldiers and our own citizens. We cannot allow domestic security to be traded away for a diplomatic agreement in Switzerland,” Ben-Gvir said firmly.

Even with resistance inside the Israeli cabinet, the negotiations in Switzerland are continuing on schedule. Iran has even agreed to allow International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors back into its nuclear facilities as part of a broader easing of global geopolitical tensions.
