DUBLIN, Calif. — A 40-year-old New York Times Games engineering director was shot dead Saturday afternoon in a parking lot near a sports complex in Dublin, and police say the suspects are his 77-year-old in-laws. The killing has rattled residents in the East Bay city, where the scene sits close to the police department and a busy shopping area.
Jonathan McKinsey of Dublin was found fatally shot at the Dublin Sports Grounds. Authorities say the couple accused in the shooting, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, were taken into custody and later charged with murder. Police have not released a motive.
Witnesses saw the shooting unfold
Witnesses described a fast, unsettling scene. Assad Razawi said he was leaving Sahara Market on Dublin Boulevard when he heard gunfire from the sports complex parking lot. He then saw McKinsey collapse.
“I saw the guy drop to the floor: head bloody and chest bloody,” Razawi said.
Razawi said he also saw two people leaving the area, people he later learned were the suspects. ABC San Francisco affiliate KGO spoke with several people who saw what happened, and the incident left some residents stunned.
Arrest, charges and what police disclosed
Dublin Police Services said a sergeant driving nearby saw a man on the ground and stopped to investigate. Witnesses called 911 and pointed out the couple, who were still near the scene.
Court documents say surveillance footage recovered at the scene showed both suspects shooting McKinsey. Authorities also recovered multiple firearms while detaining the couple and searching their car. Police later charged them with first degree murder, conspiracy to commit a crime and child abuse, according to the source material.
The couple was being held at Santa Rita Jail. Their daughter, who was linked to the case through the divorce dispute, appeared virtually at a Wednesday hearing, though she could not be reached for comment. The Associated Press said it was not able to reach an attorney for the couple before that hearing.
