With the Liga MX leader looking to protect its momentum after the FIFA break, Club América instead dropped points at home. Monterrey held América to a 1-1 draw at Estadio Banorte in the 11th week of the Apertura 2026, leaving the top of the standings open to pressure.

América entered the match with 20 points from six wins, two draws and one loss. Monterrey had 13 points from four wins, one draw and four defeats, and sat 10th after a 4-2 loss to Atlante. The visitors left with a point despite finishing the match a player down.

Red card changed Monterrey’s task

The game followed an extended FIFA calendar break. América had beaten Necaxa 4-2 before the pause and aimed to carry that form into its home fixture. Monterrey, meanwhile, needed a response after its defeat to Atlante.

The club was also under pressure to keep its eight-year run of appearances in the postseason alive. Despite investment in strengthening the squad, Monterrey’s performances had been described as inconsistent, while its position outside the playoff picture added urgency to the match.

Hugo Cuypers and Diego Rossi were brought in to bolster Monterrey’s attack. Cuypers had a chance when he dribbled toward the penalty area and came face to face with goalkeeper Malagón, but a defender intervened and blocked his shot.

Then came the dismissal. After a VAR review, Miguel Borja received a red card for a hard tackle on Carlos Salcedo, leaving Monterrey to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.

América could not make the advantage count

The sending-off did not produce a late breakthrough for the hosts. América failed to turn its standing at the top of the table into a home win, while Monterrey secured a point away from the league leaders.

Other moments offered little change to the score. Arteaga sent a cross beyond its target, while Perea carried the ball toward the penalty area before losing control. Neither side found another goal before the final whistle.

For Monterrey, the draw offers a result to build on as it tries to close the gap to the playoff places. América, meanwhile, remains the team to catch after entering the match as the league leader with 20 points.
