JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds will hit the Jabodetabek area every afternoon through evening for the next five days, from Sunday, June 22 to Thursday, June 26, 2026. The alert matters because it could quickly lead to puddles, fallen trees, and severe traffic jams during the evening commute.

Based on BMKG’s analysis on Monday, June 22 at 07:00 a.m. WIB, the atmosphere over Jabodetabek was unstable. Strong surface heating during the day encourages the growth of cumulonimbus clouds, while moist air flowing from the Java Sea keeps supplying water vapor. The result is convective rain that can arrive suddenly, last briefly, but leave a big impact.

Five-Day Weather Pattern: Clear Mornings, Caution in the Afternoon

From June 22 to 26, BMKG expects a consistent pattern. Mornings will be partly cloudy, afternoons will be hot with temperatures reaching 32–33°C, then light to moderate rain will fall in almost all areas from late afternoon to evening. The chance of thunderstorms ranges from 40–62 percent each day.

Daily temperatures will stay between 24–33°C. Humidity remains high, at 75 to 93 percent, making the air feel sticky even before rain starts. Surface winds blow from the northeast to southeast at 5–30 km/h, helping carry moisture inland.

Those three factors are the main triggers identified by BMKG: local daytime heating, high humidity, and moisture supply from surface winds. Together, they create ideal conditions for rain clouds to form every afternoon.

Conditions by Area

In Jakarta, Sunday, June 22 begins with partly cloudy skies. Light rain starts in East Jakarta and South Jakarta in the afternoon, then spreads to other areas at night with a 34–42 percent chance. On June 23, thick clouds already cover the sky from morning, while moderate rain is likely across all parts of Jakarta from afternoon into evening. A similar pattern continues through June 26.

Bogor and Depok, two higher-elevation areas, record cooler temperatures in the 20–32°C range. Local rain may begin in the afternoon, then spread to Depok City and Bogor Regency at night. The intensity could be higher than in Jakarta because the terrain helps clouds form faster.

Tangerang this morning was hazy, with an AQI of 157, already classified as unhealthy. Temperatures reached 32°C since morning. Rain is expected to begin around 2:00 p.m. WIB with a 43–62 percent chance. Bekasi follows a similar pattern: clear in the morning, then light to moderate rain from late afternoon.

Risk Areas and What to Watch For

Puddles are the main threat. Areas that often flood include North Jakarta, West Jakarta, North Bekasi, and Tangerang City. Afternoon rain that overlaps with the evening commute between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. WIB will almost certainly worsen congestion on major roads.

Bogor, Depok, and South Jakarta, where many trees line the streets, need extra caution because of the risk of falling trees, especially when strong winds accompany rain. And for those planning air travel, delays at Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Halim Perdanakusuma are still possible when thunderstorms intensify.

One thing to note this morning: the UV index in Jabodetabek has already reached level 9–10, classified as Very High to Extreme. Outdoor activity between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. WIB can cause sunburn in a short time. Use SPF 30 or higher, along with a hat and sunglasses.

BMKG Advice and How to Check Updates

BMKG has officially advised the public not to shelter under trees or billboards during lightning, to watch for puddles in flood-prone areas, and to keep checking weather updates before heading out. Convective weather changes quickly and can shift within minutes.

BMKG issues its early warning updates every six hours. The public can follow them through the InfoBMKG app, the weather.bmkg.go.id website, the @infobmkg X account, or by calling the 196 hotline.
