2026 World Cup Group Standings: Teams on Track for Round of 16

JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – Three teams have already secured spots in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after Matchday 2 was completed: the United States, Germany, and Mexico. In the nine other groups, the fate of dozens of teams will still be decided on the final matchday of the group stage.

The 2026 World Cup features 48 teams divided into 12 groups, with four nations in each group. The top two from every group advance directly to the Round of 16. Under this format, the competition is tighter, because one poor result can end a team’s run.

FIFA ranks teams first by points, then goal difference, goals scored, head-to-head results, and finally fair-play points.

Groups A–D: Hosts and Mexico Move First

Mexico delivered a perfect run in Group A with six points from two matches and a +3 goal difference. South Korea sit second with three points and remain in strong contention. The Czech Republic and South Africa each collected one point from draws, and both must win their last match to stay alive.

Group B is tight. Canada and Switzerland are level on four points and remain unbeaten. Bosnia and Herzegovina still have a slim chance, while Qatar, with a minus-six goal difference, are effectively out.

Brazil and Morocco lead Group C with four points each. Scotland still has three points and a chance, provided it wins big in the final match. Haiti have already been eliminated after two defeats without scoring.

The United States, the host team playing in front of their home crowd, closed Matchday 2 with a perfect six points. They are through. Australia and Paraguay are competing for the remaining ticket in Group D, and both have three points. Turkey were eliminated early.

Groups E–H: Germany Dominates, Spain Leads

Germany have been the most impressive side so far. Two wins, a plus-seven goal difference. They are through. Ivory Coast sit second with three points, while Ecuador and Curaçao are still battling for one ticket from Group E.

The Netherlands and Japan are level in Group F with four points each, and both have a +4 goal difference. They are separated only by goals scored. Sweden are still in the race. Tunisia are out.

Group G remains wide open. Egypt lead with four points, but Iran and Belgium each have two points from two draws. Three teams can still qualify depending on the final round.

Spain lead Group H with four points. Uruguay and Cape Verde are both on two points with a zero goal difference, and their race for second place should be fierce. Saudi Arabia are under serious pressure with just one point.

Groups I–L: Argentina, France, England Not Safe Yet

Norway and France both won their opening matches in Group I. But the second round for several teams in this group has yet to be played, so the table can still shift. Senegal and Iraq need wins to stay alive.

Argentina and Austria lead Group J, each with three points. Jordan and Algeria have yet to earn a point, leaving both in a critical position.

Colombia are alone at the top of Group K with three points. Portugal and DR Congo share one point after a draw, so their final-match clash could decide everything. Uzbekistan need a miracle.

Group L offers an intriguing scenario: England and Ghana both won their first matches and sit on three points, with goal differences of +2 and +1 respectively. Panama and Croatia are still on zero. Croatia, the 2022 World Cup third-place finishers, are at risk of going home early.

Three Teams Safe, the Rest Still Fighting

Of the 48 teams in the tournament, only three are fully safe so far. Dozens of others still have to calculate points, goal difference, and head-to-head results before the final matchday of the group stage is played.
