KODI, Indonesia — A powerful 6.1 magnitude tectonic earthquake struck the Sumba Barat Daya regency in East Nusa Tenggara early Sunday, October 4, 2026, triggering widespread panic and damaging dozens of buildings across the region.

Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) reported the tremor occurred at 6:55 a.m. local time (WIB), with an epicenter located at sea 14 kilometers southwest of Kodi District. The quake was shallow, originating at a depth of 10 kilometers, which contributed to the intensity of the shaking felt by local residents.

Berton SP Panjaitan, acting head of the Data, Information, and Disaster Communication Center at Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), confirmed that while the incident caused significant structural damage, there were no fatalities. Official data indicates that 20 homes in Sumba Barat Daya were damaged, with 19 classified as minor and one sustaining moderate structural impairment.

The impact spread across several villages, including Waikadada, Weerena, Bondo Kodi, and Homba Karipit. Beyond residential areas, the tremor damaged critical infrastructure and communal spaces. Local reports identified damage to the Victory Billa Cenge Pentecostal Church, the Jata Ngedo Bila Cenge Pentecostal Church, and the Waitabula Cathedral, alongside the SDK Manu Toghi school and a community health center in Wallandimu Village.

Neighboring Sumba Barat Regency also felt the impact. Military officials reported minor damage to three government-owned residences associated with the local military command (Koramil), while two KDKMP structures suffered from collapsed ceilings and wall fractures.

Medical teams provided immediate care to a single resident who sustained minor injuries from falling debris during the shaking. The individual is currently recovering through outpatient care.

Authorities have confirmed the earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat. BMKG officials have urged the public to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks while dismissing speculative reports circulating on social media regarding the event's aftermath.
