JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – The 2026 World Cup Round of 16 bracket is still empty as of June 23, 2026, but the competition map is already starting to take shape. Matchday 2 of the group stage is not yet complete, which means no team has officially booked a ticket to the knockout round.
That matters for one simple reason: the 2026 World Cup uses a 48-team format, bigger than any previous edition. The road to the July 19, 2026 final at MetLife Stadium is much longer than in past tournaments.
New Format, Longer Bracket
FIFA has divided the 48 teams into 12 groups. From there, eight group winners, eight runners-up, and 16 best third-place teams advance for a total of 32 teams in the Round of 32. Only after that does the Round of 16 begin.
The path runs as follows: Round of 32 β Round of 16 β Quarterfinals β Semifinals β Final. That adds two extra knockout rounds compared with the 32-team format used since 1998. Any team chasing the title must win seven matches.
The bracket is split into two major paths. The upper path pairs the Group A winner with one of the best third-place teams, while the Group B winner faces the Group F runner-up. The lower path is set up in a similar way across the remaining groups. Exact bracket positions will only lock in after Matchday 3 ends.
Status on June 23, 2026: No Team Has Advanced Yet
As of 10:30 a.m. WIB on June 23, 2026, no team has secured a place in the Round of 16. That makes sense: teams need points from three group-stage matches, and Matchday 3 will only start in the next two to three days.
What is already visible is which teams hold the strongest temporary positions.
| Team | Current Points | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Egypt | 3 | Beat New Zealand 3-1; need one more point on Matchday 3 |
| Belgium | 1 | Drew 0-0 with Iran; still alive |
| Ghana / Panama | TBD | Waiting for Matchday 2 results |
| Uzbekistan / Colombia | TBD | Will decide the top of Group B |
Egypt is closest. One point from its next match would be enough to secure a place in the Round of 32. Belgium needs more than that, but Iran and the teams below it still have room to fight back.
The Tightest Group Scenarios
Three groups deserve closer attention right now.
Group G is the most intriguing. Egypt has 3 points, Belgium has 1. If Egypt draws at least in Matchday 3, it advances. But if Belgium wins, the calculations change quickly and the other teams in the group could also be pulled into the race for the last ticket.
Group H is waiting for the Ghana vs. Panama match on Matchday 2. The winner of that game would move to 4 points and hold the safest position at this stage. If it ends in a draw, both teams remain locked in a tight race until the final match.
Group B will be shaped by Uzbekistan vs. Colombia. The winner controls the table and has a strong chance to finish first, a more favorable position in the bracket because it avoids an early meeting with another strong runner-up.
How to Read the Bracket and Team Positions
There are three positions that determine where a team lands in the bracket.
Group winners occupy the top side of each path and face runners-up or third-place teams from different groups. Runners-up go into the lower side and meet other group winners. The eight best third-place teams from the 12 groups also enter the Round of 32, but their bracket positions are assigned by FIFA based on a combination of group results.
One thing is worth keeping in mind: winning the group is not just about pride. In this 48-team format, group winners usually get a slightly easier early route because they avoid an early clash with other strong group winners.
Round of 16 Schedule and Live Broadcast
The Round of 16 is scheduled for June 29 through July 2, 2026. All matches will be played in cities across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. With the PDT time zone, a 7:00 p.m. PDT kickoff is equal to 9:00 a.m. WIB the next day, which means most matches can be watched in the morning in Indonesia without staying up late.

The full bracket with team names will be updated as soon as the group stage Matchday 3 ends and FIFA releases the official results. Tournament format source: FIFA.com.
