Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 26H2 for October 2026

JAKARTA, JOURNALARTA.COM – Microsoft has officially confirmed that Windows 11 26H2 will launch in fall 2026, likely in October. It is not a major update, but the package size is only about 200 KB.

The news was first reported by Windows Latest in February 2026, after references to version 26H2 appeared in Windows test builds. Microsoft has now reinforced the plan through official developer documentation.

Small Package, Fast Install

Windows 11 26H2 is built around an enablement package—an activation package under 500 KB that only changes the system version and build number. Installation is expected to take two to five minutes, with one restart. No dramatic visual changes. No surprise features.

The pattern mirrors Windows 11 25H2, which was released last year. Both sit on the same code base as Windows 11 24H2, the last major feature update released on October 1, 2024.

For everyday users, the meaning is simple: if a PC is already running any Windows 11 version, moving to 26H2 should not feel like switching operating systems.

Why Microsoft Changed Course

Since 2024, Microsoft has separated major annual updates from routine feature delivery. Significant features, such as support for a movable taskbar or low-latency gaming profiles, now arrive through monthly cumulative updates instead of being bundled into the yearly release.

The logic is clear. Large companies need stability. Big updates mean longer testing, possible operational disruption, and migration costs. With a small package that only changes the version number, IT teams can schedule system maintenance much more easily.

Home users gain too. They no longer have to wait until October for new features. Updates arrive every month, automatically.

Support Period and Device Requirements

The support window for Windows 11 26H2 follows Microsoft’s standard pattern. Home and Pro editions will be supported through October 2028, or 24 months after release. Enterprise and Education editions get an extension through October 2029, or 36 months.

For comparison, Windows 11 24H2 will stop receiving security updates on October 13, 2026, while 25H2 is supported until October 12, 2027. For users who are not planning an upgrade soon, that matters when weighing system security.

There is no change in hardware requirements. The minimum remains 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and a 64-bit dual-core processor at 1 GHz or higher, the same requirements Windows 11 has had from the start. If a PC is already running Windows 11 now, 26H2 should run without trouble.

One interesting note: Microsoft is also developing Windows 11 26H1 for devices with newer processors such as Nvidia N1 and Snapdragon X2. But even with a different foundation, there are no exclusive features in 26H1 that are missing from 26H2.

What Comes Next

2027 may tell a different story. Microsoft has not confirmed anything yet, but reports suggest Windows 11 27H2 could return as a major platform update, including a unified code base for all device types. If that proves true, it would be the biggest jump since 24H2.

For now, users only need to wait for October. The update is small, the process is fast, and the risk is close to zero.
