REBOLEIRA — Daniel Bragança's 59th-minute goal gave Sporting a 1-0 win at Estrela Amadora, settling a match the visitors controlled for long spells without finding it easy.
Sporting finished with 67% of the ball. Each side had three shots on target, and Sporting completed 428 passes to Estrela's 287.
The goal that opened it up
Sporting moved the ball better before the goal but ran into a compact Estrela side happy to sit deep and slow the game down.
Bragança's goal changed that. Estrela had to come out, and Sporting could manage the lead with more room to attack and less pressure on their own defense.
Sporting won four corners to Estrela's one. Estrela committed 10 fouls to Sporting's 16 and picked up four yellow cards. Nobody was sent off.
Lineups
Estrela started with Pinho, Stoica, Marcus, Höög Jansson, Robinho, Doué, Langa, Scholze, Schappo and Lekovic. Their bench included J. Cabral, J. Meireles, J. Encada, E. Doué, S. van Hooijdonk and David Grilo.
Sporting's starters included Suárez, Trincão, Catamo, Bragança, Hjulmand, Araújo, Fresneda, Debast, Quaresma, Silva and Ribeiro. Rui Borges made changes during the second half, bringing on Vagiannidis, Morita, Quenda, Diomande and Nel among others.
Life after Gyokeres
Maxi Araujo spoke to Sport TV about Viktor Gyokeres leaving for Arsenal and said the squad was glad for their former teammate.
"Betrayed by Gyokeres? No. The group and I were happy for him, he deserved it," he said. "He did something incredible for Sporting. Personally, and I think the whole group was happy for his departure. I wish him the best."
Araujo also stressed the strength of the squad and the need for a good result at home before the return leg.
