Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff believes Ayao Komatsu dropped Esteban Ocon to shield Haas from criticism after a dispute over team strategy. Haas and Ocon have not confirmed why the driver left before the end of the season.
Ocon’s departure stunned the paddock during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. He was already scheduled to leave Haas at season’s end, but the split came after he argued with race engineer Laura Mueller during second practice over the team’s tire strategy for him.
Wolff’s interpretation
Wolff said Komatsu had reached a point where he needed to defend the team against what he called “certain rhetoric.” He added that Ocon believed he had done nothing wrong in his comments.
“You’ve got to respect that at the end, the team calls the shots,” Wolff said. “The team principal needs to decide when it’s enough, and that is what Ayao did.”
Wolff’s explanation is his interpretation of Komatsu’s motives, not a reason Haas or Ocon has publicly confirmed. The available comments do not establish what Ocon said during the dispute or whether it directly led to his departure.
A strained season at Haas
Ocon has scored fewer points than teammate Oliver Bearman throughout the season. After the opening race, Ocon also suggested the team’s cars were not the same; Bearman later confirmed there had been inconsistency between them.
The departure opened a route for Brazilian Rafael Camara to make his Formula One race debut earlier than planned at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Komatsu called that promotion a “tough decision,” particularly after reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa finished 10th when he stood in for Ocon in Mexico City.
Camara had been expected to join Haas for his first full Formula One season in 2027. Komatsu said the team selected him after testing four drivers, citing his speed as the decisive factor.
