Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday 27 November and Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November, though the selling has already started in several markets. Walmart, Target and Best Buy have published US calendars. Currys, Argos, AO and Boots opened UK sales in late October. Amazon Australia has set 17 to 30 November, and Walmart Canada begins on 12 November. As of 7 November we found no published Black Friday window from Amazon in the US, UK or Canada, and no dated Black Friday announcement from Shopee or Lazada in Singapore.

For Singapore shoppers, that makes the calendar a three-step affair: 11 November, 27 November, 12 December. ShopBack's guides stress that participation is each store's own decision every year.

How to tell a real discount

The sharpest numbers come from Which?. Published in November 2025, its study tracked 175 home, tech and health appliances at eight UK retailers from May 2024 to May 2025. Across the sample, 83% were the same price or cheaper at least once outside the four-week sales period. By retailer, the figure ranged from 55% to 94%. None of the deals was at its lowest price of the year on Black Friday 2024 itself.

Regulators are now putting money behind the point. On 14 October 2026 the UK's Competition and Markets Authority announced fines of about £6 million under its new direct powers. Wayfair must pay £4.8 million: its "Daily Deals" and "Flash Deals" carried countdown timers, yet many products stayed at the same or a lower price after the deadline. Appliances Direct was fined £1.2 million and Gold's Gym £45,000. All three admitted breaches and settled early. The regulator can fine firms up to 10% of global turnover.

CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell framed the campaign last November around a simple test: "the price they see is the price they'll pay".

Each market has its own version of the rule on "was" prices:

  • UK: the CMA says a reduction claim misleads once it no longer reflects the item's usual price. Its example is a £120 product cut to £90 for so long that £90 has become normal.
  • US: the Federal Trade Commission's pricing guides say a former price must be genuine and regularly offered to the public. An inflated price set up to allow a large reduction is fictitious.
  • Australia: the ACCC reviewed 50 retailers in its 2025 Black Friday sweep and found concerning claims at about half. Its targets include countdown timers, "sitewide" sales with buried exclusions, "up to" claims and was/now pricing. In September 2026 James Lane paid A$19,800 and Vuly A$39,600 in penalties over alleged false urgency in their 2025 sales.
  • Canada: the Competition Bureau applies two tests to a regular price. More than half of sales must have been at that price or higher, or it must have been offered in good faith at that level for a substantial period, usually within a year of the promotion.
  • Singapore: competition regulator CCCS says discounts should be measured against a genuine previous price. In February 2025 it reported that OSIM's "usual prices" on several products had not actually been offered to consumers during the period it examined.

The checks these bodies and Which? describe are mostly unglamorous. Look at the price before the sale starts. Which? names PriceRunner for price histories across retailers and camelcamelcamel for Amazon. Compare identical model numbers and the total including delivery, as the FTC suggests. Read what "up to" covers: MoneySavingExpert's sample of 10 items at one UK chain found a typical 24% off under an "up to 40%" banner.

Price guarantees are a separate promise with their own limits. Argos's covers later price drops at Argos, not rivals going cheaper, according to MoneySavingExpert. Target and Best Buy's holiday guarantees also match only their own later prices. Which? and MoneySavingExpert give different registration deadlines for Currys's guarantee, 1 December and 27 November respectively, so Currys's published terms are the ones that count.

Scams and where to report them

The warning signs repeat across borders. The FTC's latest holiday alert we could find, from November 2025, flags social media ads offering brand names at unusually low prices, and sellers who insist on gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps or cryptocurrency. Canadian federal agencies warn about lookalike web addresses and needlessly complicated checkouts. Singapore police warn against advance payments and direct bank transfers, and sellers who move the conversation to messaging apps.

If money has gone, the bank comes first in the Australian and Singaporean official guidance, because it can stop further transactions.

CountryWhere to report
USReportFraud.ftc.gov. Card disputes go to the issuer, with a letter due within 60 days of the first bill showing the error
UKReport Fraud, the Action Fraud replacement: reportfraud.police.uk or 0300 123 2040 (England, Wales, Northern Ireland). In Scotland, Police Scotland on 101. Forward scam texts to 7726. Citizens Advice consumer helpline: 0808 223 1133
AustraliaBank first, then Scamwatch. Cybercrime reports to police through cyber.gov.au. IDCARE helps with identity misuse. Misleading sale ads can be reported to the ACCC, with images
CanadaLocal police first if you are a victim, then the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: reportcyberandfraud.canada.ca or 1-888-495-8501. Fake sales go to the Competition Bureau's complaint form
SingaporeBank first, then a police report online or at a Neighbourhood Police Centre. Police hotline 1800-255-0000. ScamShield helpline 1799, open 24 hours, or go.gov.sg/scamreport. Report e-commerce sellers to the platform as well

Return rights by country

CountryChanged your mindFaulty goods
USMostly store policy. FindLaw says most states have no specific refund law; those that do mainly require the policy to be disclosedExpress and implied warranties can require repair, replacement or refund
UKOnline: 14-day cooling-off period from the day after delivery, with exceptions such as personalised goods. In store: no automatic rightFull refund within 30 days. After that, one repair or replacement first. Faults within six months are presumed present at delivery
AustraliaRetailers need not refund or exchangeConsumer guarantees apply, including on sale items. A major failure gives the choice of refund, repair or replacement. "No refunds" signs are unlawful
CanadaOntario: stores are not legally required to refund or exchange. Rules are provincialVaries by province. Ontario's Consumer Protection Act covers online deals above $50 and requires disclosure of return terms
SingaporeNot covered by the Lemon LawRepair or replacement first, then price cut or refund. Defects reported within six months are presumed present at delivery

The UK cooling-off and in-store wording above follows Citizens Advice guidance for England. Faulty-goods rules follow the Which? summary of the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Which? adds that UK credit card purchases between £100 and £30,000 can also be claimed under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act.

Retailers can go further than the law, and some extend their windows for the season. Best Buy lets purchases made from 30 October to 31 December come back until 15 January 2027, or 31 January for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. Target's extension covers purchases from 1 November to 24 December, with a window opening on 26 December. Most electronics and entertainment items run to 24 January 2027; Apple, Beats and mobile phones to 8 January. In the US, the FTC notes that sale and clearance goods often carry different return rules, so the policy on the item is the one that applies.

Frequently asked questions

When is Black Friday 2026?

Friday 27 November 2026, with Cyber Monday on Monday 30 November. The dates are the same in the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Singapore, although retailers' sale windows differ widely.

Has Amazon announced its Black Friday dates?

In Australia, yes: 17 to 30 November. As of 7 November we found no published Black Friday Week dates for the US, UK or Canada, and Amazon's Singapore page was unavailable when we checked.

How can I tell whether a Black Friday discount is genuine?

Compare the current price with the item's history before the sale, not with the retailer's "was" price. Regulators in all five markets treat invented or inflated former prices as a problem, and Which? found most deals in its study were matched or beaten at other times.

Can I return something I bought on Black Friday?

Faulty goods are protected in all five countries, on terms that vary. Changing your mind is different: the UK gives 14 days on online orders, while elsewhere it generally depends on the store's own policy.

What to watch next

The next dates arrive quickly: 11.11 in Singapore on Wednesday, Walmart's US and Canadian early events on 12 November, Amazon Australia on 17 November and Best Buy's main run on 19 November. Amazon's US announcement is the obvious gap, since last year's came on 9 November, eleven days before its event began.

Enforcement moves more slowly. The ACCC says it will keep monitoring discount claims after the September penalties, and the CMA says it has investigations under way across ticketing, gyms, homeware, online reviews and air travel. Which? said in January that Report Fraud was expected to extend to Scotland during 2026. We will update this page as retailers fill in their calendars.
