MOUNTAIN VIEW — Google's Gemini artificial intelligence assistant has crossed 1 billion monthly active users, the company announced Tuesday, joining ChatGPT as only the second AI chatbot to reach the milestone. The surge comes as Google reshuffles its AI leadership to close the gap with rivals OpenAI and Anthropic in frontier model development.
Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously DeepMind's chief technology officer and Google's chief AI architect, is stepping up to become senior vice president and will oversee the unit's Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and developer tools. He replaces Demis Hassabis, the DeepMind cofounder who will shift to a chair role at the organization.
The leadership change signals an urgent shift in Google's AI strategy. DeepMind hasn't unveiled a frontier model since early 2026, while OpenAI released GPT-5.6 and Anthropic launched its Mythos model—both heralded as advances that reset performance benchmarks. "The goal will undoubtedly be to close the gaps with Anthropic and OpenAI in some areas," Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, told CNBC.
Kavukcuoglu's promotion points toward a recalibration. "It feels like a move designed to adjust the focus away from academic projects and more toward improving frontier performance and the toolset for developers," Wood added.
User Growth and Usage Patterns
Gemini's 1 billion-user milestone, reached less than a month after Google reported 950 million in its latest earnings, underscores rapid adoption. The app now rivals ChatGPT, which crossed 1 billion monthly users in May and became the first AI chatbot to do so. Anthropic's Claude trails at 56 million monthly users as of Q2 2026, but has grown 640% year-over-year.
Usage patterns reveal how Gemini is embedding itself into daily routines. Voice interactions account for 63% of all user engagement, with busy parents 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks. One in five interactions involve screen sharing and live camera feeds—a feature set that distinguishes Gemini from text-only competitors.
Apple users comprise over 100 million of Gemini's active base, with macOS users prompting around twice as frequently as other platforms. Google also disclosed that Gemini generates 150 million images daily, a capability gaining traction among small businesses.
The Frontier AI Race Intensifies
Google's appointment of Kavukcuoglu arrives amid intensifying competition in advanced AI coding and reasoning. OpenAI set the pace after launching ChatGPT publicly in late 2022. Google responded in November 2025 with Gemini 3, which analysts said "moved the frontier forward" with capabilities exceeding prior-generation expectations. However, 2026 has shifted momentum toward OpenAI and Anthropic, forcing Google to accelerate its development cadence and refocus resources on commercial performance rather than academic research.
Coding capability has become central to the battle. Each company now emphasizes its model's ability to write, debug, and optimize software—a skill increasingly valued by enterprises. Kavukcuoglu's move to prioritize "developer toolset" improvements suggests Google is betting on stronger coding features to regain ground.
Stock markets reacted coolly to Gemini's milestone. Google shares fell 3.4% on Tuesday, pacing for an 8.4% decline over the past five trading sessions, though the stock remains up 9.6% year-to-date. The stumble reflects investor skepticism that user growth alone translates to competitive advantage in frontier AI—a space where model capability, not install base, determines market leadership.
