Google may expand Gemini AI’s “Call for Me” feature on Android to handle short calls to friends and family, according to details found in an app teardown reported by Android Authority. The possible change would move the tool beyond business calls, though Google has not confirmed a public release.

The examples point to brief, practical messages rather than automated conversations. One asks Gemini to tell a caller’s mother they will be 15 minutes late; another asks it to check whether someone is coming to dinner.

That is a narrower role than having an AI conduct a full catch-up call. Still, it could offer another way to pass along a quick message, including to people who prefer phone calls, often miss texts or use a landline, The Verge reported.

Gemini AI call permissions remain unconfirmed

Android Authority also reported finding “granular permissions” for Gemini actions inside individual apps, including what appear to be settings related to phone calls. The controls could let users decide which app capabilities Gemini can access.

Those settings may also give people a way to opt out of incoming automated calls from Gemini. That distinction matters: a tool that makes calls on someone’s behalf could affect not just the person activating it, but also the people receiving those calls.

The controls are only indications in the app teardown, not a confirmed feature. Android Authority noted that Google might not release either the calling expansion or the granular app settings publicly.

No launch date or wider availability was included in the reported findings. The feature’s eventual behavior, including how it would identify itself during a call, is not established by the available source material.

A limited task, with a real-world trade-off

For users, the reported examples suggest Gemini could take a small communication task off their hands without replacing a full conversation. A short call may reach someone who does not check messages, but automated calls also make permission choices and recipient expectations part of the product’s design.

That makes the reported app-level controls significant, even though their presence in a teardown does not guarantee they will ship. If Google releases the feature, users may need to choose which actions the assistant can take, while recipients could encounter calls generated by someone else’s AI.

For now, the reporting describes a possible Android expansion, not a product announcement from Google. The reported examples include a message that someone will be 15 minutes late.
